Go Captain Cheadle!

I’m a big fan or Funny or Die as they always seem to have some real funny viral videos. Here’s the latest.

If you’re a child of the 80s, as I am, then you must remember “Captain Planet and the Planeteers”. It was an animated show that attempted to bring climate change and environmental awareness to youngsters. While it did wake kids up to recycling and caring for the planet, it wasn’t very cool and really, you hated the kids and the mullet-wearing Captain.

So when Funny or Die produced Don Cheadle as the new Captain (Cap, we’re assuming was a white guy), we knew it was going to be hilarious. Please be advised the sketch does contain salty language.

Monkey Mayhem

Just released is the latest trailer for “Rise of the Planet of the Apes”. Silly title aside it’s difficult to ascertain if this is a prequel to Tim Burton’s lacklustre ”Planet of the Apes”, a reboot or a standalone feature. Either way, from the teaser, it looks like the usual sci-fi formula of scientists messing around, lose control of the project and the monkey poop hits the fan.

James Franco leads the cast as a scientist working on a cure for Alzheimer’s by testing on apes (great idea, he should have watched Deep Blue before attempting this). Then test subject chimp Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, begins to mutate rapidly and well we know what happens from here.

Weta Digital who brought us visual effects for “Avatar” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, takes the helm here and so we can expect the same brilliance. No Burton monkey suits, thank goodness. However I just don’t see anything that will make us think other than why that gorilla needed to pick the lock to his cage and not just kick it open.

The film is set to release August 5th, 2011.

Alien <3 Predator

Howzit, it has been a while. That’s what happens when trying to work and attempts at a social life will do to you. And I know Boss Prawn (Ed — Boss. That does has a nice ring to it.) must have wondered if I had quit. No I didn’t Prawn.

Thought I’d show you a silly indulgence of mine. I’m a big fan of the Alien and Predator franchises. They are maybe the best alien badasses ever brought to the silver screen, and one day while cruising for anything porn pred, I stumbled on Alien LOVES Predator.

It’s a crazy take on the two aliens Abe (Alien) and Preston (Predator), and the hijinks they get up to as two bachelors. Chaos follows them as they try to live together in their New York City apartment. Simple things like riding the subway and eating out become hilarious, but the really funny one is their speed-dating with human women.

The webcomic is created by Bernie Hou, who uses humor based on adsurdism and non sequitors. The artwork for the strip is made using real-life action figures of the characters set against real-world background photos of NY.

So if you want to have a chuckle, and have some time on your hands, shoot over to Alien Loves Predator. It is also on Facebook, and you can follow Bernie on Twitter.

Arnold the Musical

I love Arnie. The man is a legend and holds a special place in my heart, for a kid growing up in the eighties. His movies are iconic, some of them could be forgotten (The Sixth Day & End of Days), but the rest are epic. The flowing course of busting heads, dismembering baddies and thick Austrian one-liners were a staple and was like watching a musical. How cool would it be if someone did put Arnie’s bloody mayhem to music? The brothers Jon and Al Kaplan have done just that, take a look.

X-Men First Class

After the disaster that was X-Men: The Last Stand, producers immediately got to work on a now staple reboot. Fans lambasted the third episode and Hollywood makes money off fanboys so it was a definite no-brainer.

And here’s the result. The film, set during the 1960s, will focus on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the origin of their groups, the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants. The film stars James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. It also stars Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, the antagonist of the movie. It releases on 3 June 2011, even in South Africa.

Personally I’m tired of the X-Men but take a look and let us know what you think.

What’s Tony Stark got there?

Well I was kicking back and watching some movies yesterday. Was watching Iron Man 2 and just for a brief moment, in a couple of scenes, Tony is downing some green muck from a beautiful flask. Kept wondering what the hell it was, is it metal?, is it battery operated? Mental note to self, google after movie.

Amazingly I wasn’t the only one interested in it as it returned a number of hits and some youtube vids. It’s the KOR water hydration vessel.  A beautiful piece of design by RKS, a design house, for KOR founders Eric Barnes & Paul Shustak.

Essentially it is just a water bottle for the iPhone generation, where carrying water on the move has became a necessity and an accessory nowadays. There’s a lot of facts on why this particular bottle is better than the run-of-the-mill ones, which I wont get into, but I love this product…..and so does Tony.

Real Steel

Looks like 2011 is going to be the year of the mechs, with the third installment of Transformers and now Hugh Jackman’s Real Steel.

Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next.

Adapted from a short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson, the author who gave us “I Am Legend” and “What Dreams May Come”. Directed by Shawn Levy who gave us “Date Night” and the “Night at the Museum” films. Not exactly brilliant but we can hope he delivers here. It is set for release on the 7 October 2011.

Here’s the trailer, let us know what you think.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Well it’s out and, as always, the teaser gets you pumped only to be disappointed by the feature. Transformers: Dark of the Moon will be rather different seeing that the writing duo of Roberto Orci & Alex Kurtzman did not pen this installment. And most importantly high school skank, Megan Fox was not cast. However Shia LeBeouf is :reallypissed:

Set for release on the 1 July 2011.

Watch for yourselves and let us know what you think. I’ll be happy to find out who the Transformer is, that’s shown at the end.

Gonna Cut Loose!

Most of us guys have secrets. Hygiene habits, a man-crush, fetish, and a track/song that nobody else knows we love, that we dance to alone. Mine is “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins. I don’t know what it is about this track but it always makes me wanna dance or tap my feet when I’m with company. So when I came across a movie mashup with this song as the soundtrack I had to share.

So tap your feet or just get up and cut loose to this awesome video.

Whes ma sammich bech!?

I always love a good laugh and here’s one for this dreary Friday.

What is it with guys and the abuse that they hand down to noobs and women, in online gaming. I have been on the receiving end of these, being a male and a noob, but women get the worst of it.

Here’s one for the ladies (if OLP has any female-gamer readers) and the guys who need a good laugh.
