The House of Meggs

Graffiti and street art has come a long way from the simple spray can-to-the-wall treatment we’ve seen many a decade ago. Imagine my surprise, when I came across this exceptional artist from Melbourne, Australia. Hailed as one of the most talented artists from down under, David “Meggs” Hooke is renowned for applying his paints and stencil designs onto walls and canvases to create some amazing, expressive artworks.

His street art and gallery pieces can be seen in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, and Tokyo. Check out some of his exceptional hand-crafted artworks after the jump.

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – First Gameplay Footage

I’ve been looking forward to today for quite some time. Why? Because Bethesda Game Studios has released a brand new trailer for the latest in their line of Elder Scrolls of games, that of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

As a long-time fan of Elder Scrolls, this news came as a very pleasant surprise. I’ve waited for what seems like an eternity for the next game in this engrossing series to be released, and finally, it was announced that Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would be released on 11.11.11. To add to the excitement, Bethesda has released the first ever gameplay footage of Skyrim. Words cannot do this video justice, so I will leave you to watch it below.

I am hugely excited about this! Are you?

We Review: Red Dead Redemption – Undead Nightmare

For as long as I can remember, the ideology behind cowboys and the Wild West has enthralled me. So too has the phenomenon known as the undead. Imagine then how surprised I was when Rockstar Game Studios announced the culmination of two of the greatest (and most successful) storytelling experiences. Red Dead Redemption on its own was a blockbuster of epic proportions, and even I didn’t expect it to do as well as it did. Now imagine throwing zombies and other supernatural creatures into the mix. You wouldn’t be wrong if you assumed that it would lead to an even greater gaming experience. Let us embark upon a journey. A journey of awe and wonder. A journey of shock and horror. A journey of the undead. [Please note: If you haven’t finished Red Dead Redemption, you may encounter spoilers in this review.]

Sundance Film Festival 11 – Video Games In The Spotlight

It’s that time of the year again. What time you ask? The time of year when aspiring film makers get together at one of North America’s great indie scene movie festivals, the annual Sundance Film Festival to be more precise. Hosted in Salt Lake City, Utah, it’s every hopeful movie-maker’s dream to succeed at this event. Many of today’s biggest Hollywood film makers had their humble beginnings at this prestigious festival, amongst which are Steven Soderbergh and Quinton Tarantino. Some of the movies which gained fame at this festival are The Blair Witch Project, Little Miss Sunshine, Reservoir Dogs, SAW, and Napoleon Dynamite.

From 20 to 31 January 2011 we saw some truly inspiring work come from this popular movie outing, but for the purpose of this article we will look at a topic which is close to our hearts – video games. Yes, the 2011 Sundance Film Festival boasted with quite a few video game-themed projects and even a panel where members of the press (and public) could interact with the writers of such games as Alan Wake and Uncharted.

So it would seem that video games are really in focus for independent film makers. We have collected a trio of video game short films to show what talent we can expect from the future film-makers of Hollywood. Have a look at them after the jump.

The Layman’s Guide to Braaing

I must tell you, writing this article has just made me incredibly hungry. I mean, just look at the header image and you’ll understand why.

The topic of discussion today is the South African pastime known as The Braai. If you’re an international reader, you’re probably wondering “What the heck is a Braai?” Well never fear, I’m here to not only tell you what a Braai is, but also shed some more light on the whole phenomenon.

A Humorous Look at Technology

We live in an age of wonder where people are able to communicate with each other instantly. Using cell phones, computers, and gaming consoles, to name but a few. We have become so reliant upon these marvels, that to envision living life without them is down-right scary. It has integrated into our very fabric of existence, and it is funny to see how we have evolved with it.

I’m sure all of you, me included, have had a discussion along these very same lines at some point in the recent past. How would life have turned out differently without cell phones? I personally cannot imagine a life without mine. But it’s not just cell phones that shape the way we live; we depend on televisions, refrigerators, microwaves and coffeemakers (who can function without coffee these days?).

Let’s take a look at the comical aspect of how we as humans have evolved along with technology and where inevitably it might lead. Read more after the jump.

Top Five Movies to Avoid in 2011

Hollywood. It’s been hit and miss over the last few years and it just seems to be releasing more and more poorly thought out or underachieving movies.

In recent years, quite a few movies come to mind that definitely triggered my own gag reflex. Amongst which were titles like Max Payne, Uwe Bol’s Bloodrayne, Far Cry, and Postal, and who can of course forget the original Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat movies.

Then there were the non-game related movies, such as, Gigli (Yes you remember the box-office flop which “starred” Ben Affleck and J-Lo.), Batman & Robin (Or more aptly titled, how Batman came out of the closet.), and then of course the Scary Movie franchise and its spinoffs (Disaster Movie, Epic Movie, etc.)

Now if you’re like me, and you like watching movies in your free time, then you obviously want to watch the best possible quality movies that are out there, and sometimes you are so hyped up by the preview trailers, that these over-hyped movies don’t always deliver in the expected way. Keeping that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the potential flops of 2011 after the jump.
