Lost in Tokyo

Photographer Mark Bramley found himself in Tokyo, Japan for two days. He did what any good photographer might do — he created a time-lapse video of the things and people that he encountered in this most cosmopolitan of cities. Lost in Tokyo comprises 10,000 photos, all shot on a Canon 5D MkII. Check it out below.

Apocalypse Tomorrow: A Pin-up Calendar fit for a Cataclysm

Illustrator Andrew Tarusov imagines that our world that has undergone a cataclysmic event and has designed a sexy pin-up calendar as a pick-me-up for the hard times. Each month of the calendar features a different type of apocalypse and pretty lass suitably (un)dressed for the occasion.

The Blue Marble Through the Years

On December 7th in 1972, far far above our heads, Apollo 17 blasted off from the Earth on its way to the Moon. About five hours into the journey, the spaceship was 45,000 kilometres away and at the point where it was facing the Earth, the astronauts onboard took photos of our planet. One of those photos (AS17-148-22727) which showed a fully-illuminated Earth looked like a glass marble to the astronauts, and is famously called The Blue Marble.

NASA has continued The Blue Marble series with similar photos in 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010, and the two most recent images date from just a few days ago. The initial image was captured by the Earth-observing satellite Suomi NPP and focussed on North and Central America. Due to popular demand NASA released a second image, this time displaying Africa, Saudi Arabia, and India to the east. Have a look at these two amazing images after the jump.

The Most Beautiful Sea Jellies

It’s not the first time that we’ve posted about the Alexander Semenov. The marine biologist works at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) in northwest Russia and photographs the most wonderful undersea animals as part of his job. After four years at WSBS, Semenov is now the chief dive master and a camera is always on hand when he journeys into the depths of the White Sea.

When I first began to experiment with sea life photography I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates underwater and then I shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure, I ended up with a few good pictures, which inspired me to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive.

There are over 1500 known species of jellyfish in the world and Semenov has photographed quite a few, especially the Cyanea genus of stinging jellyfish. After the jump you will find some of the striking deep sea jellies that Semenov has encountered, more specifically photos of Cyanea capillata, the lion’s mane jellyfish.

Samurai Star Wars

Steve Bialik took us to feudal Japan in his set of Star Wars portraits, drawn as if they were woodblock prints. In a similar theme, US-based artist Clinton Felker draws some of the characters as high-stylized samurai warriors.

Matthijs Vlot has become the darling of the supercut world. Vlot mashed together a multitude of scenes from other movies to create two of most cheerful mashups that you’ll see on the Internet today (if you haven’t seen them already that is). In Hello, he sources dialogue from a variety of films and syncs it to Lionel Richie’s love song of the same name. And in Ooh Aah, he uses exclamations from other film and cartoon characters to add to Meg Ryan’s fake orgasm scene from “When Harry Met Sally”. See Vlot’s masterful supercuts after the jump.

Pretty Paint Explosions by Nick Knight

If there is anything we have learned from the likes of Nuit Blanche, Alexandre Farto, and Alan Sailer, it is that explosions can looks very beautiful. Fashion photographer Nick Knight hammers the point home in a series of photos that he took in 2005. What look like colourful abstract flowers are in fact paint explosions.

No Budget Sci-Fi: “Archetype” by Aaron Sims

You may recall Jesús Orellana’s ROSA and wonder who else may have made amazing, no-budget short films. In his labour of love, conceptual artist Aaron Sims explores the trope of ridiculously human robots. His 7-minute sci-fi short, Archetype, mixes CGI and live action to tell the story of RL7, a bi-pedal battle machine that starts acting outside the parameters of its programming.

RL7 is an eight-foot tall combat robot that goes on the run after malfunctioning with vivid memories of once being human. As its creators and the military close in, RL7 battles its way to uncovering the shocking truth behind its mysterious visions and past.

I’m sure that was the creator’s intention, but Archetype certainly leaves me wanting more. Here’s hoping Sims can find the funding he needs to complete the project.

Minimalist Movie Motors

Graphic designer Brandon Ortwein championed the cause of the humble van in his It Would Have Been Cooler As A Van series. Kevin Henry (Boomerjinks) over at DeviantArt is also putting vehicles in the spotlight with his set of posters. Henry takes famous motors from films and TV and illustrates them in the minimalist style.

ChronoCon: First Light

Pentalunex Team built a custom dolly rig, the ChronoCon, and shuffled over to Greece to shoot an time-lapse video that has, depending on your tastes, been improved/ruined from some HDR processing. Another misstep perhaps is the musical accompaniment, the severely over-used “Intro” by The XX.

The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics is a cute little animated short film that won an Academy Award in 1966. Based on the book of the same name, this short film, directed by Chuck Jones, tells the story of a line who falls in love with a dot. The love is not reciprocal, for the dot sees the line as too straight, and directs her affections toward the wild and rebellious squiggle. Despite the stern rejection, the line turns to unconventional methods to gain the attention of his love. Does the story have a happy ending? Find out below.

One Week in Japan by Mike Matas

Time goes by so quickly in this time-lapse video from Mike Matas. The photographer and his girlfriend travelled to Japan, and for one week, took photos of the things, people, and places that they came across. Beautiful Undersea Photography by Alexander Semenov

Alexander Semenov is a marine biologist stationed at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS), a remote research centre that is located on the Karelsky Coast in northwest Russia. Semenov is part of the dive team at WSBS and during his excursions, takes close-up shots of the truly beautiful and bizarre fauna lurking in the depth of the White Sea.

Fleeting Light: Striking Geminid Meteor Shower Time-Lapse

Los Angeles-based photographer and film maker, Henry Jun Wah Lee camped out for three days in the Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California, and during this visit in December 2010, the photographer witnessed a spectacular thing — the Geminid meteor shower. The meteors in the shower originate from the constellation Gemini and scientists have noted that the numbers seem to be increasing with each year, with sightings of 120 to 160 meteors per hour!

Not all of the light streaks captured in Wah Lee’s time-lapse video are meteors. They tend to appear in one or two frames, the trails that last longer than a few frames are slower moving aircraft. Wah Lee titled his most amazing video, Fleeting Light: The High Desert and the Geminid Meteor Shower, because as spectacular as shower may have been at the time, it is long gone now.

PROTEIGON

Created by animators Steven Briand (BURAYAN) and Luca Fiore, PROTEIGON is a creative stop-motion film featuring the transformation of simple shapes into other forms. Granted it could have been as easily done with CGI wizardry but it’s nice that the two creators took the time to do it by hand. It’s timed to some excellent music as well.

Phantom Cocktails

There’s no slow motion like phantom slow motion. You may recall the fun night that Tom Guilmette had with his Phantom Flex camera in a hotel room. This time, film maker Ty Migota uses a similar camera to capture various drinks and cocktails being destroyed. The majority of the shots were filmed at 5,000 frames per second, except for the martini shots, which were done at 8,900 fps. The clip is set to “Here’s a Little Something for Ya” by the Beastie Boys.
