Thank you for all the awesome entries in our Resident Evil: Revelations giveaway competition! We saw some very creepy stories indeed (read them here), and it seems that the score is pretty much tied between Resident Evil and Silent Hill being the creepier game (with a couple of chimes in for Dead Space, and one…ahem…interesting call for Hannah Montana: the Movie: The Game. Seriously…why would you voluntarily play that?)

To be completely fair to the people who didn’t enter a scary story, we’ve assigned every valid entry a number, and the assigned every entry with a story with a second number (bonus chance! Yay!) and our winner is…

We have a winner! Our judges sat and deliberated the answers we got. Sat for DAYS, cloistered in a top secret room at Prawn Central HQ, arguing the various merits of each answer, deciding on a wittiness score, thoroughly perusing each word in each answer over. It nearly came to knives and swords, and in the proceedings, we almost lost one of our judges (Lord Nigiri, which ordinarily wouldn’t have been too great a loss, but he also serves as Custodian of the Shiny Things, which is a very important post). Still, the judges wouldn’t leave the room until they chose a winner. Chosen a single winner they have done; it’s a sad pity we can’t choose everyone!

We underlings figured that, since Lord Prawn is not keeping too close an eye on things here at Prawn Central (himself being over in Sri Lanka at the moment), we’re going to bestow upon you, Our Awesome Readers, a prize: Mercury Hg for Xbox 360 (courtesy of UTV Ignition Games). That’s right! You can win yourself the very game that was just reviewed here! The caveat, of course, is that we’re going to require you to read the entertaining review! “Livin’ it Up” Challenge: On the Home Straight

If you were paying any attention (I have my doubts considering these harsh economic times), you’ll know that earlier on we suffered a little catastrophe in the special blogger version of the Livin’ it Up game. We rebuilt the property only to be visited by the seedier side of E.T.’s family. They made off with a half-pipe and a couple of flamingos. Weirdos.

The Livin’ it Up bloggers challenge pits Onelargeprawn against seven evil bloggers to win a covetable iPad. We’re currently in first place on the leaderboard, however, we’re trading blows for top spot with Justin Hartman, who you may know as the CEO of blog aggregator, Afrigator. If you’d like to help the under-~~dog~~prawn to win over the highly-paid suit, then you’ve come to the right place. We get a virtual $1000 for each person that we get to sign up for the game. “Livin’ it Up” Challenge: The Great Flood

Aaah, the trials of a home owner. If it isn’t a burst geyser, it’s the neighbourhood dogs that take poops outside your door. And if there is ever a moment to put a damper on one’s day, it’s a flood. Not a flood of biblical proportions mind you, only one that selectively washed away our house, garden, car, and pair of prized attack geese that we lovingly called Fish and Chips. I talk, of course, of our virtual possessions in the Livin’ it Up game.

The other day a calamitous flood claimed our possessions and we had to make a claim. The many years of TV mind control had impressed upon us the important of insurance and covering our assets adequately (I wear underwear almost everyday). With the settlement money in hand, rebuilding our life was a few clicks away (if only it was like that in real life). So yes, we’re back and we even had enough in the pot to buy two more attack geese, Salt and Peppa.

We’d obviously love to add more stuff to the property but wouldn’t you know it we’re running low on funds (again). If you have helped us out in the past two weeks, please accept our humble thanks, but if you’ve stumbled onto this post now, we sure could do with your assistance to top-up our bank balance. We need help, yes we do! You may (or may not) have caught our first post on a special edition of Standard Bank’s “Livin’ it Up” challenge that pits Onelargeprawn against seven evil bloggers to win a covetable iPad. Livin’ it Up is an isometric life-simulation game where the player is given a wallet full of cash and an empty patch of land. By purchasing a house, a motor vehicle, and a host of garden ornaments, the player is awarded with points. With each purchase that is made, more points are awarded to the player. That is what we’re in dire need of and we’re hoping you, dear reader will be able to help us.

Our property is coming along quite nicely since the last week. It finally had some grass cover on it, and our prize pair of attack geese (Fish and Chips) are having a wonderful time pecking at passers-by. “Livin’ it Up” in My Birthday Month

June. It’s an auspicious month. Some decades and nine months ago, two people did something unmentionable and out I popped. It is my birthday month. At home I have instituted a law wherein the occupants are obliged to be nice to me for the whole month, and not just on the day of my birth. It was not received well, let’s say Hosni Mubarak would have faced more of a warm welcome in Tahrir Square.

So, it is my birthday month and I think a bit of self-aggrandisement is in order. I would like an iPad, and considering there is no chance of it sauntering into my life, I have decided to go with the next best way that I know to acquire things: winning them. I have been invited to take part in a special Blogger’s Challenge that will pit me against seven other bloggers for the opportunity to win the covetable device. I’m Scott Pilgrim and they’re the evil exes. The battleground is a cutesy strategy game, and Ramona is the iPad. After the dust has settled, the blogger with the highest score will have won. So, what has this got to do with you? Well, dear readers, I shall require your help in overcoming the many obstacles in my path and claim the top prize. And if helping me out doesn’t make you feel good on the inside, there are superficial prizes for you to win because this challenge is also open to the public. Still interested? Good. OK, so the game in question may be fairly similar to a Facebook one that elicits such diverse reactions as unparalleled joy all the way down to the sounds of horrible retching. Created by Standard Bank, the Livin’ it Up game has you starting off with an empty patch of property and a wallet full of cash. With it, you can purchase a house and buy things to make it a home. You can buy all sorts of items from fuzzy dice, free-flow, and a ludicrously large spoiler for your car to different room upgrades; you also purchase security measures such as razor-wire and attack geese.

It seems that your property is situated at the corner of Realism lane and Disaster avenue. As such, it is not immune to the weather gods, and if there is anything advertising has drilled into your head all these years, it is that you should never be without insurance when a disaster strikes. Parents would be wise to let their children take a turn at this game. It will enlighten kids about the pangs of working life, and how squirreling away money for emergencies is always a good idea. If there is anything that will dispel their fluffy dreams of a tax-free life, it might well be this. Let’s keep it real.

You need to insure your belongings and by managing various everyday processes, you increase your points score in the game. At the end of each month for the next couple of months, the top scorer walks away with a different prize. In June the prize is a Nintendo Wii, a Sony Bravia 32” LED in July, a PS3 in August, and so on. Towards the end of the year, one thoroughly dedicated winner will drive away in new BMW 320i. The Minkster Competition Winner!

A week has come and gone so quickly and we’re at the end of another Onelargeprawn competition. Super awesome Capetonian graphic designer Alex Seaton created a sliding tile puzzle especially for our competition and to stand a chance of winning one of her cute Minkster flash drives, we asked you to solve that puzzle in the fastest time possible. We tracked these times on a high scores table and after the dust settled, a patient and motivated competitor placed first (and second, and third, and fourth!).

Like all of them in the series, his Minkster includes a wallpaper and icons, a puzzle game, and a bonus paper toy that he can assemble at his desk. Solve a Puzzle, Win a Minkster!

Did you know that the preliminary USB flash drives sold in late 2000 could only store up to 8 MB of data? We’ve come a long way since then with newer, fancier flash drives being able to hold hundreds of GBs of erotic art personal stuff and allow a bazillion writes to the drive (OK, I lied. It’s only a million.) The design of these devices has changed too and miniaturization has resulted in them being incorporated into everyday items like pens and watches. We’re far more interested in the creative aspect though and have seen a fair share of unusual flash drives. My personal favourite is the humping dog but I’m a touch peculiar.

Keeping with the theme of creative flash drives, we stumbled onto the works of a lovely Cape Town-based graphic designer. Alex Seaton is the creator of Minky, a playful range of designer products and Minksters is her series of super cute USB flash drives. Pure Football Competition: We Have a Winner!

Uruguay played France in the second match of the 2010 soccer world cup and resulted in another draw, this time with no goals being scored at all, and an altogether forgettable match. This result does brings our Pure Football competition to an end. You may have seen our “half-time” stats and noticed that a small percentage of entrants (three to be exact) made it from the previous round having correctly predicted the outcome of the South Africa versus Mexico clash. Pure Football Competition: Half-Time Results!

The first game of the 2010 soccer world cup has ended and that marks the half-way point in our latest competition. You might recall that we’re giving away two copies of Ubisoft’s Pure Football and to stand a chance of winning a copy, we asked you to predict the outcome of both opening games today. With South Africa having drawn the match against Mexico, it means neither team came out victorious and that spells bad news for our competition entrants who predicted a win from either side. Here are some of our half-time stats in case you’re interested:

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is two days away and the united blare from Vuvuzelas all around South Africa is helping to ramp up the excitement levels. Our friends at Ubisoft are excited too, not only about the month-long spectacle awaiting us, but also their first foray into the core soccer genre, Pure Football. English captain Steven Gerrard graces the cover of this five-a-side arcade simulation that emphasizes aggression and physicality that perhaps might not be allowed in normal games of footy.

We’ve got two copies of Pure Football and don’t know what to do with them. You could take one of them off our hands by simply predicting the outcome of the two World Cup games that will be happening this Friday, South Africa vs Mexico and Uruguay vs France. The Red Dead Redemption Competition Winner!

Our Red Dead Crossword competition has ended and we’re hoping to make Friday marginally better for one lucky person. We were giving away hamper of consisting of Red Dead Redemption merchandise and a set of classic western movies on DVD. To stand a chance of winning said hamper, entrants were tasked with solving our wild west themed crossword puzzle and then decoding the anagram that was formed by specially marked letters on the puzzle. The answer we were looking for was NIGHT HAWK, which in cowboy terms, is a person who watches over a herd of cattle during the night.

I can’t recall being this excited for a game since Uncharted and Grand Theft Auto IV. Rockstar’s critically acclaimed Red Dead Redemption gets released in South Africa today. It was a bumpy road on the way here as the stock got unceremoniously bumped off flights from Europe due to the ash from that inconvenient Icelandic volcano. I’ve ordered mine through local online retailer Kalahari.net and they’ve been sacrificing all manner of organic material to the gods to ensure their customers get the game on time. Whilst I wait for my copy to arrive, I just wanted to remind you about our latest competition.

I’ve been quietly excited about Rockstar Games’ upcoming title for short a while now but with every trailer, gameplay video, and featurette that has come along, the excitement has grown to a deafening crescendo. Violence touches Marston again and he is forced to hunt down his old companions to bury his past, one gunslinger at a time. That’s the gist of the epic western, Red Dead Redemption, which will be coming to all good gaming consoles (sorry Wii owners) on May 21st. To get you in the mood for Red Dead Redemption, our friends at Megarom and Look & Listen have put together a sweet hamper for us to give away to one lucky (and industrious) reader. Instead of the usual Flash game type of competition, we’ve gone back to a format from last year that proved both interesting and educational – a crossword puzzle! And to win the hamper, all you will need to do is solve our little puzzle. The Internet is your encyclopaedia so it should be fun, like shooting fish in a barrel. The Darksiders Competition Winners

Our Darksiders competition has finally come to an end. In case you missed the action, we started off the competition asking people to toss a turtle as far as they could. Many productive work hours were lost in the process, and in the short space of two days, some of the entrants had klapped the game so hard that they surpassed the theoretical maximum score! So an update to the competition was required, and we went into a sudden death round, where a score over 10 million guaranteed the entrant a place in the next round.

Six persistent entrants made it into the sudden death round and we asked them to play one of my favourite indie games from last year, Adam Atomic’s Canabalt. They had 24 hours to submit their scores. That time has expired and we have now arrived at the official winners announcement. Find it after the jump.

Darksiders Competition: An Important Update

Gamers, sometimes they are like bulls in a china shop. Two days into our Darksiders competition, and two very persistent (read: crazy) people have surpassed the theoretical maximum high score for the flash game we selected for the competition. That completely blindsided us ad we hadn’t expected such dedication so early in the proceedings. Needless to say, there is only one PS3 copy of Darksiders up for grabs, so we have had to make an adjustment to the competition. If you have entered, please take a look at the update after the jump.

The competition will still run its normal course until midnight February 28th, with a notable change in the high scores tables. Each table is now changing into a Sudden Death list – the persons on that list are the ones who have scored over 10 million, and will progress into a sudden death round on March 1st. These entrants will play a different flash game for one day only, and at the end of it, the highest scorer will be declared the winner. So, for those PS3 entrants who have not scored over 10 million, you have a little short of 12 days to accomplish this, and send in your screenshots to the usual e-mail address – see the competition post for those details.

For each list, if we were to receive only one 10 million+ score by the end of the competition, that person will win the copy of Darksiders, however, if we receive multiple 10 million+ scores, then those entrants will go into the sudden death round where the highest scorer will be declared the winner.

My apologies if this has irked you, but given the circumstances, I think it’s the best way forward.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing Darksiders (read our review here) and in our first competition in 2010, we want you to experience that feeling too. Thanks to our sponsors, SterKinekor, we’re giving away a copy of Darksiders for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and a Darksiders-branded t-shirt to go with each copy.

Instead of the usual lucky draw type of competition, we’re trying to keep things a little different here at Onelargeprawn. Based on the popularity of our play-a-game-to-win-a-game idea last year with our Boxhead competition, we’re going to ask you to do something heinous…to a turtle. You might go to hell for it, but I’d like to think the end justifies the means. ;-)

So what do you have to do? Find out after the jump.

To stand a chance of winning the prize, all you need to do is play Toss the Turtle and send us your high score. We’ll have two separate high scores tables (one for PS3, one for Xbox 360) and the two people at the top of the tables at the end of the competition will win. Here are the steps you need to follow.

1. Head to our Toss the Turtle page and play the game.
2. When you’re happy with the distance you’ve tossed the poor turtle, take a screenshot (howto) of the game, ensuring your distance is clearly visible.
3. Attach your screenshot (preferably in JPG format) to an email message and send it to darksiders@onelargeprawn.co.za with these other details:

c. Console of choice (PS3 or Xbox 360)
d. T-shirt size (S / M / L / XL)

During the competition period, you can submit as many scores as you want under the same name, but pay attention to our high scores page as we’ll be regularly updating it. At the end of our competition, if your name tops the high scores list for the platform you chose, you’ll will have won. In the event that there is a tie in the highest scores, the winner will be the person who submitted that high score first. Got it? Cool, now toss that turtle!
