The Green Lantern movie has just popped up on our cinema screens, so I went along to go and see if it was worth any fuss. You might know his mantra of “in brightest day, in blackest night”, but is the movie any GOOD? Hit the jump to read my review (no additives, no fats, no spoilers. Lots of greens).

It looks like comic book to movie translations are the thing at current, and the latest one to hit is Green Lantern. Some of you might not have been aware that there was a superhero called Green Lantern, and that he frequently fought alongside the more famous Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. For the purposes of this review, I’m going to assumed that you’re still….green. As it were.

As you may or may not know, DC (the chaps behind some of the comic characters mentioned above) have decided to reboot their confusing mess of a comic book universe and start again from issue #1 of EVERYTHING. One suspects that the movie incarnation of Green Lantern, played by Ryan Reynolds, is meant to coincide with the DC universe reboot. If you were not a big fan of the comic books, it might help to know that over the course of Green Lantern’s 50 year (give or take) history, several men have donned the costume, and the movie follows the second (and arguably most famous) Green Lantern, Hal Jordan.

The movie screenplay follows the induction of Hal Jordan into the Green Lantern Corps, a bunch of hyperpowered, multispecied, green intergalactic peacekeepers. Is the movie suitable for someone who is completely new to the Green Lantern stories? I’d say so. The movie gives you a very good overview of what the Green Lantern Corps is, why they exist, and even to quite an extent, how they get their power. All of this is nicely covered in the first 5 minutes of the film, too. The story and dialog, while not, perhaps, as engaging and deep as some would have hoped (given that the Green Lantern comic book series has some deep morality stories behind it), is still pretty suited to introducing new people to the superhero, while attempting to not alienate old fans.

The acting in the movie was about as average as you’ll find; the problem is that Ryan Reynolds’ performance comes off as somewhat cheesy as he delivers his lines. I think it’s the grin and goofy look. I don’t think he is suited to this role, and I am pretty certain that the internet hivemind can easily suggest three or four other actors who might fit the role better. Despite his pretty ripped physique (which the Green Lantern costume goes to great pains to show off), his personality just is not right. He tries to make it work, however, and at least he doesn’t fail completely. His co-star, Blake Lively, on the other hand, had a pretty forgettable performance. In that order. She’s pretty. And she’s forgettable. The better performances came from Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong, but either way, you’re not going to be blown away by any of the human actors. It seems to be becoming more and more typical these days that the virtual actors are now more captivating than the real ones.

My biggest criticism of this movie is that, for an action flick, there just was not enough action. The fight scenes are short, scrappy, and too few and far between. You also see too little of Green Lantern’s awesome abilities, and you leave the cinema feeling as if they’d just barely kissed the green cap of the iceberg that is Green Lantern’s power. Frankly, I’ve seen more special effects and action in Days of Our Lives. Maybe they were saving all that for the sequel? I do understand, on the other hand, that there is a fine balance between supersaturating a movie with action, and squirting the movie with a tiny plastic water pistol half-filled with bits of action. Green Lantern manages to fall just short of that delicate balance, sadly.

Despite what you may have heard or read, and despite its problems, it’s not a terrible movie by any means. It’s a good, fun romp and a decent introduction to the Green Lantern story if you have no prior experience with it at all. Because Green Lantern is a superhero movie, you should not expect anything heavily cerebral, which is as it should be: superhero movies are meant to be bright and flashy and fun, which is certainly what you’ll get with this movie. And you really can’t ask more of it than that.

Score: 6 ½ prawns (3½ prawn loss for lackluster story, lackaction movie, and lackbetter actor)

X-Men: First Class launches today country-wide across cinema screens, and I was invited to the preview screening courtesy of Nu-Metro. I also asked a good friend, the owner of Reader’s Den comic shop, to tag along and give me his professional opinion of the film. This, the fifth film in the X-Men movie canon, is set in the 1970s and tells the story of the genesis of the X-Men. Usually, the more sequels there are in a film series, the worse the quality becomes, until it is a writhing, painful mess that is eventually left to rot in a dank, fetid corner, tossed aside with yesteryear’s garbage. However, X-Men is a highly beloved franchise, and First Class is less a sequel than a prequel. How does it stack up to its elders? Read the spoiler-free (as much as is reasonable, anyhow) review after the jump.

To allay any fears that First Class is a step downwards, I am going to state from the start: WHOAH! Not a Keanu Reeves type “whoah” but on the same level as being forced to drink the basest of coffees, and then suddenly being introduced to Kopi Luwak. Or being made to watch Police Academy 7, and then being introduced to…well, anything funny. There’s no real comparison. There are some amazing performances from the cast, which includes James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, January Jones as Emma Frost, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, and Rose Byrne as Moira McTaggert. Some of the cast from the original X-Men movie also show up as cameos, but you will have to watch the movie (or read a spoiler-filled review) to find out who. The basic story is that of Xavier and Lehnsherr, whom anyone who already follows the X-Men saga already knows, were firm friends before they became archenemies. The film makes a good attempt at conveying the cause of the split in their ideologies, and the causes of the split in their friendship.

At no time did the film ever feel overly boring (despite the running time of just over 130 minutes), although newcomers to the franchise might feel slightly out of depth. McAvoy’s performance as a younger Charles shows that he has a great talent at endearing himself to the audience, and his portrayal of what would eventually become the driving force behind the X-Men is believable. And believability is all we ask of an actor’s performance. Despite McAvoy’s performance as the primary protagonist, it’s still veteran actor Kevin Bacon who steals the show, as usual. It’s what bad guys do, I guess. There is also a wonderful sense of Pokémon-ness about the two opposing sides gathering mutants. And as any true Pokémon fan knows: Gotta catch ‘em all. Or beat the living mutant genes out of the ones you can’t catch.

The biggest flaw with the film—and the fact that this is its biggest flaw should indicate how wonderful the film is—is the continuity problems that disjoint it from the other films in the franchise, but this is so incredibly minor that you would have to know the other films reasonably well to pick it up on first viewing. The other problem it faces is that, bar Xavier and Lehnsherr, an otherwise international cast of characters have been Americanized. For example, Moira, who is Scottish in the comic, is depicted as American in the film. Yes, the problems are this minor. Director Matthew Vaughan has quite successfully, on the basis of a single movie, rebuilt and eradicated the terrifying freefall that the X-Men film franchise was in, and brought it soaring back above the clouds.

I highly recommend that you go see this film, whether you are a fan of the X-Men, a fan of comic books to movie conversions, a fan of action films, or a fan of just good, solid, brilliant storytelling. The story is solid, the film is enjoyable, and the acting and effects are still believable enough that they do not break your enjoyment of it. Fans of Police Academy will probably find it lacking somewhat in situational humor.

Score: 9 prawns (1 prawn loss for continuity problems, Americanization of characters, and minor CGI problems.)

Every once in a while a movie comes along that really inspires awe in the movie-goer. It’s fast paced, action packed and really loves to play with your nerves. It tugs at your heart strings and it even inspires you to do greater things with your life.

So what would you do if I told you Green Hornet does none of these things?

Don’t believe me? Check out the full review after the jump.

Plot…

The Green Hornet is, for lack of a better description, a superhero movie. Or it tries to be. The basic premise: a rich guy (Britt Reid – played by Seth Rogen) inherits a newspaper from his deceased father. He is depicted as a toy boy/womanizer, throwing money at everything. Sounds familiar right? Enter stage left Kato (Jay Chou), the guy who has been making coffee for him every morning/his father’s mechanic/a whole lot of other way cool, awesome, things.

One drunken evening they decide to do mischievous things and they end up saving a woman from being mugged. They like the idea of crime fighting so much that they decide to become superheroes. Britt’s money and Kato’s talent leads them to become some pretty awesome crime-fighters. The only catch is they want everyone else to think that they are really criminals fighting their way up the criminal food chain. Wacky right?

Now, armed to the teeth with a Chrysler Imperial called Black Beauty, they speed into the streets, stopping crime wherever they find it. That is, until they start pissing off the city’s crime lord, (with the almost impossible to pronounce name) Chudnofsky, who later renames himself Bloodnofsky. To further complicate things, Britt hires a new PA (Lenore Case – played by Cameron Diaz) at the newspaper and both of our heroes instantly falls in love with her. This leads to one of the most confused love triangles ever on the big screen. With a plot involving friendship, love, and politics, you can be sure that it will certainly be an interesting bit of time spent at the cinema.

Score…

The Green Hornet, from an audio standpoint is very sturdy, it does everything a superhero movie is supposed to do. It accentuates the good points and the bad points. The score was produced by Academy Award nominated and Emmy Award-winning composer James Newton Howard who also composed music for previous hits like I Am Legend, The Dark Knight, and The Last Airbender.

Cinematography…

One would expect a comedy of these proportions to be badly put together, but the film’s director, Michael Gondry certainly managed to pull off a technically sound movie. The camerawork is flawless and the stunt coordinator, Jeff Imada, certainly provided the film with some excellent fight scenes.

Acting…

Seth Rogen’s slapstick comedy style, reminiscent of his previous movies like Pineapple Express and Superbad, feels a bit out of place for a movie such as The Green Hornet. Then again, Rogen did write the role of Britt Reid. For me, Jay Chou carried this movie from beginning to end, with his insane martial arts style and funny dialog. One person who really messed up the movie was Cameron Diaz. It would seem the only reason she appeared in this movie was to lend the movie screen time from a much more famous actor than Seth Rogen or Jay Chou. Where she fails is in her cold and aloof approach to her character. I’ve never in my life seen someone force a performance like Diaz did in this role. At the end of the day, I think the story would have gone a lot smoother if she wasn’t in the movie at all. As much as I like her as an actress, she just did not do it for me in this adaptation. Christoph Waltz (from Inglorious Basterds fame) is the villain in this movie and in my opinion is a very likable character. He comes across as a bit weak in the sense that he seeks everyone’s approval, and Waltz portrays this quite well.

Ending…

All in all, Green Hornet is not the best superhero movie ever made, but it is certainly an entertaining one. It tends to drag out in the beginning and a bit in the middle, but fortunately it more than makes up for it with a stellar and action-packed ending. It leaves the door open for a possible sequel, but to be quite honest with you, I didn’t find the story engaging enough to want to see a sequel. Unless they seriously up the ante in a sequel, I would not spend money on watching it.

Here is a short preview trailer for people interested in watching this film

Score: 6/10

In 2005, you followed the antics of an endearing bunch of New York City zoo animals who journeyed from captivity from to the jungles of Madagascar. Now roll on the sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, where it is time for Alex the lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer), and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) to leave Madagascar and head back home to New York. The self-engrossed lemur King Julien XIII (Sacha Baron Cohen) and trusted advisor Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer) tag along as well. They’ll be flying aboard the rickety Air Penguin airline, where safety comes last. Piloted by always entertaining Skipper (Tom McGrath) and his fellow penguins, the airplane experiences trouble mid-flight, and crash-lands in the wilds of Africa.

More about the African safari after the jump.

As the penguins set to repair the plane, the other animals are overwhelmed to see more of their kind on the African plains. This is when film moves away from the group effort you saw in the previous outing to singling the animals out into their own little moments of self-realization. Marty meets a herd of doppelganger Zebras who all look and talk exactly like him; Melman the hypochondriac giraffe finds works as a witch doctor to the locals and the voluptuous Gloria finds herself being courted by the smooth-talking hippo Moto Moto (will.i.am).

Alex, however, takes centre stage once again, when his is reunited with his father, the alpha lion Zuba (Bernie Mac) and mother Florrie (Sherri Shepherd). The happiness soon ends when the evil Makunga (Alec Baldwin) executes his cunning plan, becomes the alpha lion, and banishes Alex and his family from the pride. The animals are forced to deal with the consequences of living amongst their own kind. The very next day, everyone is in a panic when they discover that their watering hole has dried up. Determined to make up for his failure, Alex and Marty risk their lives by stepping out of the reserve to discover the cause of the problem and return the water to their lands.

With the penguins and self-loving lemur stealing the show yet again, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is an entertaining romp. Unfortunately I found there were too many plotlets squeezed into the film that it hardly left room for the primary story to unfold. Overall, it’s good-natured and there are some very funny moments, but I was expecting a bit more from the franchise.

“There are no clean getaways” – no truer is this phrase than in No Country For Old Men. Adapted from the 2005 novel written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy, this extraordinary film is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and is part western, part thriller, and is relentlessly violent.

Set in the desert landscape of 1980’s West Texas, welder and Vietnam veteran Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is out hunting when he comes upon the corpses of several Mexican drug runners and their vehicles. It’s the scene of a drug deal gone tragically wrong, and Moss finds two million dollars in a satchel near the massacre. Rather than reporting the incident to the police, Moss takes the money and drives back to his trailer and wife, Carla Jean (Kelly MacDonald). Feeling unsafe, Moss sends his wife off to Odessa while he travels separately with the money.

Two million dollars going missing is bound to raise alarm bells, and it’s not long before people are sent out to retrieve the lost funds. One of those people is deadpan sociopath Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who not only has a funny haircut but a slaughterer’s gun. Chigurh is a dispassionate killer who leaves behind dead bodies wherever he goes, and after some investigating, tracks Moss down to a room at a motel. Chigurh also finds three Mexicans after the same prize and kills them with a silenced shotgun. In the meantime, Moss makes an escape with the money. The chase is on.

More details after the jump.

As the cat-and-mouse game continues, Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) and Deputy Wendell (Garret Dillehunt) follow clues to the drug massacre site, and discover information that indicates Moss may be involved somehow. They start their own investigation. Meanwhile in an office building in Dallas, bounty hunter Carson Wells (Woody Harrelson) is meeting with the businessman who hired Chigurh in the first place. Wells has dealt with Chigurh before and likens him to the bubonic plague. The businessman hires Wells to “neutralize” Chigurh and get the money back.

As Moss hitchhikes to a small border town, he is pursued by Chigurh, who in turn is being sought by Wells, and not too far behind are Sheriff Bell and Deputy Wendell. Will Moss be able to get away with the money or will his life be ended by the figure of evil that is Chigurh?

Winner of four awards including Best Picture at 80th Annual Academy Awards, No Country For Old Men has a run time of 122 minutes and is rated 16V. This Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with special features including:

Brace yourself and get the barf bag ready as Cloverfield is set to take you through a dizzying tale of escape and survival in a besieged post-911 New York city.

Cloverfield, by rookie film director Matt Reeves, is filmed from the point of view of a single camera. It starts early in the morning as Jason Hawkins (Mike Vogel) and his girlfriend Lily (Jessica Lucas) videotape their preparations for a farewell party for Jason’s brother Rob (Michael Stahl-David) who is about to leave for his job in Japan. As the party gets started, Jason entrusts Hudson “Hud” Platt (T.J. Miller) with videotaping the testimonials for Rob. As Hud goes about his duties, he tries (unsuccessfully) to flirt with his crush Marlena Diamond (Lizzy Caplan). The party is interrupted as the building shakes and suffers a power outage. Shortly thereafter, a huge explosion rocks Lower Manhattan and sends debris flying towards the building. As the partygoers escape the building, the streets become filled with panicked citizens, Hud records what seems to be a giant alien monster between the buildings…

More juicy details after the jump.

As buildings collapse around them, Jason tells everyone that they need to escape Manhattan via the Brooklyn Bridge, but as they cross the span, the monster crushes part of the bridge, sending Jason and hundreds of people to their deaths.

Being forced to return to Manhattan, the grief stricken Rob decides to head uptown to try to save Beth McIntyre (Odette Yustman), the woman he loves, though he’s afraid to tell her how he feels. Beth is trapped in her apartment, and on the way there, the group is caught in the crossfire between the US military and the mysterious monster, and narrowly escapes into the subway, only to be further attacked by the monster’s parasitic creatures. With all the chaos around them, will the group reach and rescue Beth? Will the monster continue to devastate the city, or will the US government give the go-ahead for the “Hammerdown” protocol in a last-ditch attempt to control the monster?

Cloverfield is intense and decidedly frenetic with the shaky camcorder feel helping to ramp up the anxiety and tension felt by the protagonists as they try to survive the attack. I found it pretty nauseating and suspenseful, which some people would say is a good thing.

Cloverfield has a run time of 85 minutes and is rated 16LNV. This Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with special features including:

Director’s Commentary

Special Investigation Mode — In this mode, the film plays in a small window, and a map to the left of the screen tracks the movements of the civilians, military, and the monster during the attack. Some facts about the characters and locations are displayed as well.

The Making of Cloverfield — Interviews with the cast and crew, and behind-the-scenes footage.

Cloverfield Visual Effects — An overview of the CG effects used in the movie, from the destruction of New York, to the monster, to enhancing the feel of the shaky camcorder.

I Saw It! It’s Alive! It’s Huge! — Shows the history and design of the Cloverfield monster.

Clover Fun — Outtakes from the film.

Deleted Scenes — Scenes that didn’t make it into the film. They come with optional director’s commentary.

Alternate Endings — Two alternate endings are presented with optional director’s commentary.

Felon tells the story of a hard-working man Wade Porter (Stephen Dorff) who has a thriving construction business, and lives a comfortable life with girlfriend Laura (Marisol Nichols) and their young son Michael (Vincent Miller). Porter’s happy existence turns to a nightmare when he chases and unintentionally kills a burglar who has broken into his home. In this type of situation the law states that you must physically protect yourself from robbers within the confines of the home. Porter killed the burglar outside his house and is summarily arrested and charged with second degree murder. To avoid the mandatory 15-year life sentence, Porter reluctantly accepts a deal from the district attorney and is sentenced to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.

During transportation to the prison, Porter witnesses a killing by an inmate and has the murder weapon placed on him. If Porter informs, he’ll be dead for sure, so he keeps quiet and is eventually placed in the Security Housing Unit (SHU) a maximum security wing run by the corrupt Lt. Jackson (Harold Perrineau), a sadist who makes a game of pitting prisoners against each other, like gladiators, in the exercise yard. Jackson calls time out by shooting them and sending the injured prisoners off to the infirmary.

Porter is faced with bloodthirsty inmates, sadistic prison guards, and is in danger at all times. He also had to deal with his cell mate, John Smith (Val Kilmer), a mass-murderer who is notorious for inciting riots at every prison he’s been sent to. Between the unflinching savagery that happens behind prison walls and the toll his incarceration is taking on his relationship with Laura, can Porter survive this experience and return to his family, or will the intense pressures of prison life completely break him?

Felon is based on actual events at happened in California’s Corcoran State Prison. It has a run time of 104 minutes and is rated 16LPV. This Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with a single special feature:

The Shark Tank: An Inside Look at Felon — contains interviews and behind-the-scenes footage.

Felon is also BD-Live enabled, allowing for interactive viewing and for the download of additional content over the Internet using a BD-Live equipped Blu-ray player or a Sony PlayStation 3. BD-Live is selectable from the main menu.

The fourth and in all likelihood the final installment in the Indiana Jones franchise sees a 65-year-old, virtually indestructible, Harrison Ford still slugging it out with the bad guys 27 years after he first cracked his iconic whip on the silver screen.

To be honest I wasn’t holding out much hope for this film considering Ford’s age and the huge amount of time that has passed since the last Indi movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that nothing changes in the alternate universe of Indiana Jones – he’s still a dead eye with his whip, ever ready with a sharp quip (that usually gets him a smack in the mouth from a bad guy), and devoted to hunting down the weirdest and most powerful artefacts in order to prevent the baddies getting their hands on them.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull sees Indiana, his ex-squeeze Marion Ravenswood played by Karen Allen (last seen in Raiders of the Lost Arc), and their greaser motorcycle racing bad boy son Mutt (Shia LaBeouf) race deep into the Amazonian jungle in order to find the legendary and mysterious crystal skull. They need to get to it before the Russians lead by evil villainess Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett in a rather nasty black bob wig) get their nasty hands on it. The crystal skull is obviously incredibly powerful and the Russians have every intention to do vile and iniquitous things with it. The dysfunctional but ultimately successful family unit battle the Russians, Peruvian ninjas, Mayan tribesmen, and killer ants to save the day – it’s a spectacular treasure-hunting adventure!

If you are a fan of the first three Indiana Jones movies, you will revel in the nostalgia evoked by this film. Spielberg as director, Lucas as executive producer, and Ford as hero make a great team, and do not disappoint with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has a run time of 126 minutes and is rated 13 (PGV). This Blu-ray release, the 2-disc Special Edition, presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes packed with special features including:

Pre-Production — a discussion about the script, locations, costumes, and final casting.

Indiana Jones Timelines — the three timelines History, Production, and Story are narratives told through a series of screens.

The Return of a Legend — this featurette contains interviews with director, producers, actors, and crew. Also lots of behind-the-scenes footage.

Production Diaries — this 6-part featurette (all in HD) contains a comprehensive breakdown of the production process.

Warrior Makeup — talks about the make-up used for the film’s temple warriors.

The Crystal Skulls — this featurette discusses the historical story elements about the crystal skulls and how they were created for the film.

Iconic Props — a discussion on the props used in the film including Indiana’s famous bullwhip.

Adventures in Post-Production — a featurette about the final, post-production tweaks made to the film.

The Effects of Indy — the team at Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) talks about the film’s major CGI elements.

Closing: Team Indy — a curtain call for cast and crew.

Pre-Visualization Sequences — a featurette showing the draft CGI rendering of three different action scenes.

Galleries

Production Photographs

Behind-the-Scenes Photographs

Portraits

Having lost her breadwinner husband to a heart attack, Nancy is hurled not only into a financial crisis, but into a single-mother role, having to console sons Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Shane (Alexander Gould) as they mourn their father’s passing. As the debt increases, Nancy discovers the community’s insatiable desire for marijuana, and becomes the neighbourhood weed dealer to make “easy money” and maintain the lifestyle her family is used to.

She buys her product from her suppliers who live on the “wrong side of the tracks” — wise-cracking matriarch Heylia James (Tonye Patano), her nephew Conrad Shepard (Romany Malco), and her daughter Vaneeta (Indigo). Nancy also learns the tricks of the trade from the family.

Business is good for Nancy, and her secret is well kept between her and the neighbours that buy her product behind the backs of their family members. She has to deal with, amongst others, her bitchy pseudo-friend (and complete crazy-head) Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins) who may find out about her dealing, and with her #1 customer, city councilman Doug Wilson (Kevin Nealon), who may let slip her secret. Nancy’s situation is made more complicated when her freeloading, pot-smoking loser of a brother-in law, Andy comes into town and wants to get in on the business.

Nancy continues to expand her business, and takes more and more risks. As a result, troubles come from different angles, trying to prevent her from controlling the marijuana trade in her small upper middleclass community. With plans of further expansion in mind, will Nancy be able to keep control of her business and family, or will it all go up in smoke?

Weeds Season 1 is composed of 10 episodes spread over two discs. It has a total run time of 282 minutes and is rated 16 (LNS). This Blu-ray release presents the series re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with special features including:

The son of deceased weapons manufacturer, Howard Stark, Tony is an arrogant (yet charming) billionaire and genius who spends as much time building machines as he does chasing the ladies. As a stop on his globe-trotting tour, Tony is visiting Afghanistan to promote his company’s state-of-the-art missile system, the Jericho, when his convoy is attacked and he is taken prisoner by a terrorist group, the Ten Rings. Injured in the attack, Tony is nursed back to health by fellow prisoner, surgeon, and translator, Dr. Yinsen (Shaun Toub). Already possessing a vast cache of Stark Industries weapons, the terrorists want Tony to build the new Jericho system for them as well, and in exchange they will set him free.

Will Tony submit to the terrorists or does he have other plans in mind? Read more after the jump.

Tony agrees to do what the Terrorists demand, but creates a heavy suit of armour, torches the terrorist’s munitions, and escapes. Returning to the US, Tony is a changed man. His loyal assistant Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), and pilot friend James Rhodes (Terrence Howard) are happy to see a different side of Tony. He announces that his company will cease making weapons, much to the chagrin of his second in command at Stark industries, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). Retreating from the public eye, Tony shuts himself off in his lab, improving the design of his suit of armor, experimenting with lighter metals and adding a propulsion system. Upon seeing a news report about the Ten Rings using Jericho missiles in Afghanistan, Tony flies over there and rescues Yinsen’s village from the insurgents.

Determined to fix his mistakes, Tony sends Pepper to locate the Stark Industries shipping manifests, so he can track the missile shipments and destroy them. Sneaking into Obadiah’s office, Pepper discovers a betrayal, and designs for a reverse-engineered version of Tony’s original power suit. A climatic battle takes place atop Stark Industries between the two iron men. Transformed into an ultimate weapon, the Iron Monger, Obadiah has gone power-mad, and now it is up to Tony to fight him off and prevent his research from falling into the wrong hands…

Even though the Western genre has fallen out of favour with the general movie-going public in recent decades, it doesn’t prevent filmmakers from trying to revive it. And 3:10 to Yuma is latest attempt to bring the Western out of the cold. Based on an Elmore Leonard short story that was last adapted to screen in 1957, director James Mangold remakes 3:10 to Yuma into a less psychological but more action-packed film.

In 3:10 to Yuma, Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is a simple man deep in debt, trying to hold his family together and save his ranch from the ravages of drought. In desperation Dan volunteers to be part of the posse that will escort notorious train robber Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) to a town named Contention, where he’ll be put on the 3:10 train to a prison in Yuma. For this, Dan will be paid a much-needed $200 by the railroad company.

Will Dan and the posse deliver the prisoner to Contention in time?

Contention is a day and a half away on horse-back, and the main challenge the posse faces is Ben’s gang, now led by the hot-headed psychopath that is Charlie Prince (Ben Foster). Charlie wants his leader back, and the gang is willing to gun down anyone who gets in their way. It’s a race against time and the posse is pursued relentlessly by the gang, but they eventually make it to Contention. Unfortunately so do Ben’s gang, and as the clock ticks by, they set up ambushes within the town to prevent their leader from getting on that train…

In Superbad, best friends Evan (Michael Cera) and Seth (Jonah Hill) are two weeks away from graduating high school, and are desperate to lose their virginity before going off to different colleges in the fall. They are, however, far from popular — Evan is a shy sweater-wearing geek and Seth is chubby potty-mouth who can turn any conversation into a lewd sexual innuendo.

Seth has finally scored them an invite to a house party but only if he can bring booze for the under-age crowd. The only problem is that both Evan and Seth aren’t old enough to buy alcohol legally, but their uber-geeky friend Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) says he can organize an ID. Optimism quickly fades as Fogell rocks up with the horrendously fake ID claiming he’s a 25-year-old Hawaiian organ donor whose name is simply, McLovin.

Is this the start of a slippery slope to disaster? Find out after the jump.

The problems go from bad to superbad when McLovin becomes a victim in a liquor store robbery and runs into two irresponsible and totally unhinged cops Michaels (Seth Rogen) and Slater (Bill Hader). They offer to take McLovin to the party — shooting, beating, and boozing as they tear across the city in their cop car. With McLovin gone, Evan and Seth are left to fend for themselves, and need find another way to deliver alcohol to the party before the night ends and takes with it any chances of getting laid…

Like McLovin, this teen movie *@^&ing rules! Seriously though, it would be easy to dismiss Superbad as just another crass teenage movie, but if you did, you would be missing out on what is definitely one of the funniest teen movies ever made. It is filled with truly embarrassing and authentic-feeling moments of teenage ineptitude and lust. The nerdy heroes who are disgusting, offensive, and appealing all at the same time are likely to bring memories of your own terrifying teenage years flooding back.

Superbad has a run time of 118 minutes and is rated PG. This 2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with special features including:

If the likes of Roger Ebert and the stoutly Barry Ronge can review movies, I don’t think it’s a far stretch for me to try my hand at it.

So, with brevity in mind, and a not-so-solid grasp of the English language, behold my movie review!

The Day the Earth Stood Still

What it should have been called: The Day The Brain Stood Still

The plot: We puny humans are horrible caretakers and as a result global warming is killing the Earth. Some alien elders are not pleased about this, and send a spaceship to Earth, bearing an emissary Klaatu and his large robot, GORT.

Klaatu has come to assess whether humanity can reverse the environmental damage we’ve done to the planet. His mind gets practically made up when he gets shot by the military and detained. Using cunning alien trickery he escapes and decides that the humans need to be destroyed to save the earth.

It is now up to astrobiologist Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), her obnoxious step-son Jacob (Jaden Smith), and altruism expert Professor Barnhardt (a cameo by John Cleese) to try dissuade him. It doesn’t take a brain scientist to guess the outcome.

The acting: The best actor would be the robot GORT – it did not speak. The acting is dismal – Reeves is wooden as alien Klaatu and Jennifer Connelly is squinty-eyed (that freaks me out). Jaden Smith, spawned from Will Smith’s seed, is equally lousy in this boring, poorly-paced mess.

The special effects: For a budget of USD 80 million, one would be expecting a fantastic CGI fest (there obviously wasn’t much money invested in the plot!) but the visual effects were uneven, sparse, and lacklustre.

The rating: (2/5 stars)

What’s better: Cloverfield, War of the Worlds, Transformers

What’s worse: Hannah Montana, High School Musical

There you have it – a failed narrative, half-assed special effects, dubious acting. All the essentials of a movie what will quickly fade into obscurity.

“America is all about speed. Hot, nasty, bad ass speed”. This (fake) quote from Eleanor Roosevelt sums up America’s fascination and lust for speed. To give you an idea of how popular NASCAR racing is in America, the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama has seating for 175 000 spectators! By comparison the largest NFL stadium in Washington, D.C. can only accommodate 80,000 spectators.

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby tells the story of Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) who was born in the backseat of his Dad’s speeding car. The dope-smoking Reese Bobby, Ricky’s dad (Gary Cole) skips out on the family and Ricky grows up treasuring the only bit of wisdom his father left him — “If you ain’t first, you’re last.”

Ricky and his best friend, Cal Naughton Jr. (John C. Reilly), become drivers for the Wonder Bread NASCAR racing team and are soon known as the “Shake ‘n Bake” duo. Ricky becomes NASCAR’s most popular driver, and enjoys the fruits of his labour, amassing an obscene amount of money, a bleached-blond trophy wife, and two cute (but utterly rude) sons Walker and Texas Ranger.

Ricky’s perfect world is about to hit a speed bump. Hit the jump to see where it goes.

Ricky’s happy world is about to crumble when a flashy new opponent, macchiato-drinking gay Formula 1 driver Jean Girard (Sasha Baron Cohen), threatens to take his NASCAR crown. Jean outclasses Ricky, driving him to post-crash hysteria. Ricky loses everything — his speed, his job, his wife — and moves in with his mother. Demoralized, Ricky becomes a pizza delivery guy, and one day happens to deliver pizza to his father. Reese helps Ricky face his demons and prepares him for a return to the Talladega Superspeedway where Ricky will have to face off against Jean for the right to be #1…

United States President Henry Ashton (William Hurt) is in Salamanca, Spain to attend an anti-terrorism summit. An American cable news channel is tracking the event, and Rex Brooks (Sigourney Weaver) is directing traffic from the OB van, when she notices Secret Service agent Thomas Barnes (Dennis Quaid), back on detail so soon after taking a bullet for Ashton earlier on in the year. She watches on her monitors as Ashton is introduced by the Spanish mayor, and is about to deliver his speech. Without warning, Ashton is shot twice in the chest, and utter chaos ensues. She watches as Secret Service agents surround the president and usher him into an ambulance, and amid the confusion, a massive explosion goes off in the plaza, completely destroying the podium and killing several people. At this point, the camera rewinds to the point in time where we initially joined Brooks, but the perspective changes.

The tagline for Vantage Point is “8 Strangers. 8 Points of View. 1 Truth”, and over the same 23-minute period that is looped over and over, the assassination of the U.S. President unfolds through the eyes of different people. With each perspective and subsequent rewind, a valuable new piece of the puzzle is revealed.

How complex does the puzzle get? Read on and find out.

Going into any more perspective will give away too much of the plot, but amongst others, you will follow Secret Service agents Barnes and Kent Taylor (Matthew Fox) as they search for any clues about the possible shooter; you will tag along with Howard Lewis (Forest Whitaker), an American tourist with a video camera who may have videotaped the assassin; you will sneak around with Spanish police officer Enrique (Eduardo Noriega) as he spies his girlfriend Veronica (Ayelet Zurer) in an embrace with a handsome stranger Javier (Edgar Ramirez). You will also see it from the terrorists view as they go about executing their heinous attempt. As more details are revealed through each perspective, all roads will lead you to a heart-pounding car chase and surprising final act…

Vantage Point has a run time of 132 minutes and is rated 13 (V). This Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes packed with special features including:

Audio Commentary — the director talks about the film’s production.

An Inside Perspective — an electronic press kit (EPK) of the film’s production including interviews with cast and crew.

Plotting an Assassination — explores how each point of view fits into the story.

Coordinating Chaos — shows off the stunt work that was performed including the thrilling car chase scenes, and crashes.

Surveillance Tapes — deleted scenes of sorts.

Theatrical Trailers

Vantage Point is another Blu-ray title that is BD-Live enabled. BD-Live allows for interactive viewing and enables you to download additional content over the Internet using a BD-Live equipped Blu-ray player or a Sony PlayStation 3. BD-Live is selectable from Special Features menu.

An exclusive Blu-ray feature, the Vantage Viewer: GPS Tracker, add a docked interface that allows you to track the movements of each character during the film. You can also access alternate camera angles (or aptly named vantage points) via a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) window.

Vantage Point was kindly supplied for review by Nelmari Claassens, SterKinekor Home Entertainment Marketing Manager for Sony Pictures.

If you’re anything like me, school history lessons left you yawning and, with a faint mouldy scent in your nostrils. English history especially always seemed so tedious with its endless supply of royal Charles’ and James’. The one English king who stood out from the rest was Henry VIII – the rather portly man with the neat red beard, elaborate clothing, and a penchant for chopping off his wives heads!

It’s good to be king and in Showtime’s Golden Globe-nominated series The Tudors, prepare to see King Henry VIII as never before. The handsome, athletic, virile Henry (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) is in a loveless marriage to his brother’s widow, Catherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy). The young, hot-blooded Henry delights in combat sports and chasing women. His obvious philandering doesn’t seem to make much of an impact until he falls desperately in love with Catherine’s lady-in-waiting Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer). Henry didn’t happen to meet Anne by chance; she was “pimped” by her father Thomas Boleyn (Nick Dunning) so that he and the Duke of Norfolk (Henry Czerny) could gain favour with the king.

Will Henry get the jewel he desires? More after the jump.

Henry eagerly wants to marry Anne but requires special permission from the Pope to divorce Catherine and he orders his trusted advisor Cardinal Wolsey (Sam Neill) to make it happen. Whilst he does everything that his king commands, Wolsey also furthers his own agenda – to gain a higher-ranking position in the church. Political scheming is rife and there are plenty of others plotting against Wolsey, hoping to remove him from the king’s side. It quickly becomes apparent that something significant will unravel if Henry does not get what he wants, and the world as the English court knows it, may never be the same ever again…

The Tudors is a series that brings history to life with breathtaking costumes, large dollops of sex, nudity, and intrigue around every corner. The series has a total run time of 537 minutes and is spread over three discs. It is rated 16 (SV).

This Blu-ray release presents the series re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and comes with special features including:

Interviews with Jonathan Rhys Meyers — A king’s passion, Becoming Henry VIII, The king’s court, and Making of the Tudors

Interviews with Michael Hirst — Creating the Tudors, Words Coming to Life, Casting Henry’s Advisors & the Queen

Interview with Natalie Dormer — Anne Boleyn & Henry VIII

Interview with Sam Neill — Henry’s Advisors

Penguins. I don’t like them (childhood nightmare, don’t ask) but lots of people do. They’re cute, they dress in black and white outfits, and they walk funny. Trust Hollywood to cash in on this. Now, after March of the Penguins, Madagascar, and Happy Feet, comes the animated flick Surf’s Up.

Surf’s Up is a mockumentary that tells the story of fatherless Cody Maverick (Maverick Senior had an unfortunate confrontation with the business end of a whale). Cody (voiced by Shia LeBeouf) is an up-and-coming surfer living in Shiverpool, Antarctica. When surf talent scout Mikey Abromowitz (voiced by Mario Cantone) visits the area, Cody gets recruited to compete in the Annual Big Z Memorial Surf-Off, an homage to Z, a deceased surfing legend whom Cody has idolized since childhood.

Will Cody get some bad sets at the Surf-Off? Find out after the jump.

Followed by a camera crew to document his experiences, Cody meets several rag-tag characters along the way, including a mid-western surfer Chicken Joe (voiced by Jon Heder), famous surf promoter Reggie Belafonte (voiced by James Woods), zesty lifeguard Lani Aliikai (voiced by Zooey Deschanel), and the egotistical nine-time surfing champ, Tank “The Shredder” Evans (voiced by Diedrich Bader). Cody is reluctantly mentored by Geek (Jeff Daniels), an aged former surfer and island recluse. Through Geek, Cody learns some important lessons about life and surfing. Will Cody become the kind of surfer that his idol Big Z would be proud of? This inspirational tale proves anything is possible when you put your heart into it.

Surf’s Up has a run time of 85 minutes and is suitable for all ages. This Blu-ray release presents the film re-mastered in High Definition (HD) and is packed with special features including:

Adapted from Lowell Cunningham’s cult Marvel/Malibu comic book series, Men in Black is definitely a comedy sci-fi classic that deserves a place in your Blu-ray collection. This film is action packed and highly entertaining with excellent performances by the inspired pairing of Tommy Lee Jones (Agent Kay) and Will Smith (Agent Jay) who protect the earth from the scum of the universe.

James Edwards (Will Smith), an energetic young NYPD detective is recruited to a top-secret underground government agency known as Division 6 by Agent Kay. The agents from Division 6 are known as the Men In Black on account of the smart black suits they wear as a uniform, and as Agent Jay (Will Smith) says himself, he does make that suite look good. The suit is just the beginning; Kay shows Jay the ropes and introduces him to an incredible array of extra terrestrials that have come to earth for one reason or another. Initially it seems that most of the alien visitors are benevolent or just slightly crooked, but soon through a bizarre chain of events involving a farmer and a small ginger cat, Kay and Jay realise that they are dealing with a deadly intergalactic terrorist plot…

Men In Black is captivating for every one of its 98 minutes. Director Barry Sonnenfeld keeps the film barrelling along with awesome special effects, loads of action, and truly hilarious performances from both lead roles — and as Frank the Pug would say, “If you don’t like it, you can kiss my furry little butt!”

Intergalactic Pursuit: The MIB Trivia Game — the first BD-Live online multiplayer Game to be released. Singe player is also available.

Ask Frank the Pug — an interactive game where Frank answers your questions. Silly.

Extended and alternate scenes

Metamorphosis of MIB — documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew.

Original featurette — an extended commercial for the film.

BD-Live allows for interactive viewing and enables you to download additional content over the Internet using a BD-Live equipped Blu-ray player or a Sony PlayStation 3. BD-Live is selectable from the MIB Special Features menu and once loaded, you will have access to trailers, a Sony survey, a FAQ, and the MIB Multiplayer Trivia Game.
