On December 7th in 1972, far far above our heads, Apollo 17 blasted off from the Earth on its way to the Moon. About five hours into the journey, the spaceship was 45,000 kilometres away and at the point where it was facing the Earth, the astronauts onboard took photos of our planet. One of those photos (AS17-148-22727) which showed a fully-illuminated Earth looked like a glass marble to the astronauts, and is famously called The Blue Marble.

NASA has continued The Blue Marble series with similar photos in 2000, 2002, 2007, 2010, and the two most recent images date from just a few days ago. The initial image was captured by the Earth-observing satellite Suomi NPP and focussed on North and Central America. Due to popular demand NASA released a second image, this time displaying Africa, Saudi Arabia, and India to the east. Have a look at these two amazing images after the jump.

It’s not the first time that we’ve posted about the Alexander Semenov. The marine biologist works at the White Sea Biological Station (WSBS) in northwest Russia and photographs the most wonderful undersea animals as part of his job. After four years at WSBS, Semenov is now the chief dive master and a camera is always on hand when he journeys into the depths of the White Sea.

When I first began to experiment with sea life photography I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates underwater and then I shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure, I ended up with a few good pictures, which inspired me to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive.

There are over 1500 known species of jellyfish in the world and Semenov has photographed quite a few, especially the Cyanea genus of stinging jellyfish. After the jump you will find some of the striking deep sea jellies that Semenov has encountered, more specifically photos of Cyanea capillata, the lion’s mane jellyfish.

Los Angeles-based photographer and film maker, Henry Jun Wah Lee camped out for three days in the Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California, and during this visit in December 2010, the photographer witnessed a spectacular thing — the Geminid meteor shower. The meteors in the shower originate from the constellation Gemini and scientists have noted that the numbers seem to be increasing with each year, with sightings of 120 to 160 meteors per hour!

Not all of the light streaks captured in Wah Lee’s time-lapse video are meteors. They tend to appear in one or two frames, the trails that last longer than a few frames are slower moving aircraft. Wah Lee titled his most amazing video, Fleeting Light: The High Desert and the Geminid Meteor Shower, because as spectacular as shower may have been at the time, it is long gone now.

In the spotlight today is German resident, Heinz Maier. The photographer who only started taking photos at the end of 2010 has developed a fondness for macro photography. Using food colouring, guargum and a selection of high speed photo equipment, Maier experiments with water droplets to produce some incredibly beautiful, colourful, and sometimes symmetrical splashes. Have a look at some of them after the jump.

You might not believe it, but this is an actual photograph reported to have been taken back in 2006 as the Cassini space probe sheltered in the shadow of Saturn. It was 2.2 million kilometers away from the gas giant when it took the photograph.

Astronomy Photo of the Day explains the image thus:

The robotic Cassini spacecraft now orbiting Saturn drifted in giant planet’s shadow for about 12 hours in 2006 and looked back toward the eclipsed Sun. Cassini saw a view unlike any other.

First, the night side of Saturn is seen to be partly lit by light reflected from its own majestic ring system. Next, the rings themselves appear dark when silhouetted against Saturn, but quite bright when viewed away from Saturn, slightly scattering sunlight, in this exaggerated color image.

American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, “Here’s to alcohol, the rose colored glasses of life.” While you may be aware that alcohol can bring out the beauty of a great many things, you may be surprised to know that there is an inner beauty to it. American firm Bevshots from Tallahassee, Florida creates wonderfully psychedelic artworks by placing a variety of alcoholic beverages under the microscope.

To create their images, a drop of the drink — be it a beer, a Bloody Mary, coffee liqueur, Zinfandel, or just straight whiskey — is placed on a slide in an airtight container and dried for up to four weeks. The residue is then viewed under a laboratory microscope and magnified up to a 1,000 times. The resulting micrographs show the crystallised carbohydrates that have turned to sugars and glucose. Each drink seems to have a wonderfully unique and colourful structure to it. Have a look at some of these alcoholic works of art after the jump.

The Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world, housing over 120,000 sea creatures. It houses four whale sharks, and the aquarium was designed around the 6.3-million-US-gallon whale shark exhibit. Of the aquarium’s six galleries, the Ocean Voyager exhibit contains the most fishes and includes the gentle whale sharks who are named Alice, Norton, Ralph, and Trixie. The photos taken by Hiepler and Brunier are from the viewing window of Ocean Voyager exhibit. See them after the jump.

It’s a “thrill-seeking photography craze” as described by the Mail Online. This craze is called rooftopping and you’ll be relieved to know that it’s not just another word for planking that just so happens to be done on rooftops.

Rooftopping has photographers around the world taking photos from the dizzying heights of tall buildings any skyscrapers. The more daring photos usually show the feet of the photographer as they dangle precariously from the edge of the building. Have a look at some vertigo-inducing rooftopping photos after the jump.

Thanks to the light pollution, we city folk rarely get to see such beautiful scenes as Randy Halverson does. The photographer who runs on a farm in South Dakota, spent the month of May capturing the sky he sees every night.

Summer is reportedly the best time for North American residents to view the Milky Way, but Halverson had to fight off the cold weather and strong Dakota winds to snap the starry views and his favourite shot – the Milky Way rising up from behind the old home where his father grew up. He compiled hundreds of the best photos into a glorious 3-minute video, where one second of footage is about 14 minutes in real time. The musical accompaniment is wonderful too, experience Halverson’s Plains Milky Way below.

Australian photographer and part-time astronomer Alex Cherney loves the ocean and the night sky. He captured his first long exposure of the night sky in 2009 and since then he has been captivated by that form of photography.

In this beautiful compilation video, Cherney stitches together time-lapse sequences of the dark night skies as seen over the Southern Ocean. It took him 1.5 years and 31 hours of footage to create Ocean Sky, and his efforts were rewarded at the STARMUS astrophotography competition where he was made the overall winner.

In this compilation see our Galaxy, rising and setting over the turbulent Southern Ocean, connecting the distant stars to that other fascinating interface, the ocean shore. In between the action comes from the scudding clouds and the only evidence of life, coastal shipping and the occasional aircraft darting through the night. Beyond our galaxy, its nearest galactic neighbours, the Magellanic clouds, rise high in the sky, while moonrise suddenly reveals the remarkable landscape of Australia’s south coast. All the sections of the competition are represented in this series of carefully composed images.
