For those who find skateboarding a little too mainstream, there is always the pogo stick. Shot on a Go Pro camera, this video from YouTube user pogofred shows a bunch of pogo dudes showing off all manner of tricks on their bouncy sticks.

Extreme “Slopeflying” Antics in Stryn, Norway

This looks like an extremely dangerous high-flying sequence out of a video game. But clearly it is not, for the graphics are altogether too real.

Joachim “Jokke” Sommer, an extreme sportsman shot this exhilarating clip up in the picturesque mountains of Stryn, Norway. It’s called slopeflying and shows the wingsuited Sommer as he zips dangerously close to the mountainside at a rate of 200 km/h! INTENSE!

Bust a Move With Yoga Breakdancing

String bean Arthur Cadre combines breakdancing and yoga with the greatest of ease in this dance video. Both disciplines require coordination, dexterity, strength, and skill and Cadre has all that in spades. Watch as he busts a yoga move in Break ton Neck.

The video is directed by Alex Yde and the song, Sail, is by an American dubstep band called AWOLNATION.

I Believe I Can Fly (Flight of the Frenchies)

I Believe I can Fly is a 40-minute documentary directed by indie filmmaker Sébastien Montaz-Rosset. The film follows two French adrenaline seekers Tancrede and Julien as they travel to lofty heights in the Norwegian fjords. The pair are there for a spot of rock climging, BASE jumping, and highlining, a form of tightrope walking that is done at vertigo-inducing heights. Highlining is often done without the use of a fall leash.

Montaz-Rosset follows their progress at the awe-inspiring location and what follows is an excerpt from his documentary.

I Believe I can Fly is to be made available for download at the very specific time of 11:00 on 11.11.11. Look out for it on Montaz-Rosset’s blog.

Slow Motion Surfing

Recently we showed you Tom Guilmette’s fun experiments with the Phantom range of high speed cameras. Keeping with the theme that everything looks better in slow motion, former bodyboarder Chris Bryan, captures the art of surfing at 1050 frames per second. The surf filmmaker travels to exotic locations and uses the Phantom cameras and a custom housing (the whole setup is reportedly worth USD 300,000!) to catch the wave riding action from some very creative angles. Have a look at his slow-motion show reel below, be warned though, it gets a tad NSFW at the 11-minute mark (spoiler: (_)(_)).

Ken Block Shows Hollywood Hoon

Little did I know, but a hoon is a derogatory term used to describe someone who likes to drive fast and/or dangerously. Ken Block is known as a veritable master of hoonage and in his latest video, Mr. Block makes the backlot of Universal Studios his playground. Shot in an explosive Hollywood style, Block is on fire as he crashes his modified Ford Fiesta through buildings, avoids animatronic sharks, and runs circles around a Segway-driving simian. If this is your kind of thing, then here’s nine minutes of Ken Block doing what he does best in GYMKHANA FOUR: THE HOLLYWOOD MEGAMERCIAL.

Capoeira Mei Lua

Embarrassing as it is, I have to say that the main reason I know of the existence of capoeira is Eddy Gordo and his pretty granddaughter, Christie Monteiro. You may recognize them as fictional characters from the virtual fighting game, Tekken.Of course, very real people practice the art form that has its roots in 16th century Brazil. Some people regard it as a martial art and some think it a sort of dance. Others call it their religion.

Onelargeprawn reader and lazy gamer Nick de Bruyne sent in this video of local capoeiristas in Pretoria, South Africa as they go about performing some of the graceful, flowing actions in their Capoeria Mei Lua (Half-moon Capoeira) class. Check it out below.

What struck me most about the video is the wonderful musical accompaniment. The song is entitled Pedir o Axé, and as I’m told by Nick, the twangy sounds are created from a rudimentary instrument called a Berimbau. It looks a bow with a calabash tacked on, and you play it using and a stick and a stone (or coin).

Epic Parkour Fail

I’ve always imagined parkour athletes as terribly slim, lithe creatures that are able to bound from obstacle to obstacle with poise and grace. It seems, however, that all shapes and sizes can do it. Doing it well is another matter, as seen in this clip from “Hardcore Parkour” where a gentleman attempts a stunt that does not go according to plan. Shit happens.

Update: Professional zombie survivalist Zombie_Phil has informed us that is not a fail but a highly coordinated stunt by Nasty The Horse, an ex-gymnast renowned for his testicular fortitude . You can find more of his “cup-less nut shots” on Youtube. The Horse is also on Twitter.

2011 Formula One Posters

What I know about Formula One comes directly from Wikipedia. It’s not like I dislike the sport, but I use it more as tool to further a different agenda. My significant other, Lucy Furr, finds the roaring sounds of Formula One to be soothing and it is not long before she is asleep on the couch. This accords me precious free time to play my console games. Win!

Irish graphic designer, PJ Tierney, is clearly much more interested in Formula One. And to this effect, he has created a great set of posters for the 2011 Formula One season, featuring all of the 19 circuits that defending World Champion Sebastian Wobbler and other manly gentlemen will be racing on. Tierney incorporates various racing motifs and colours and elements from the flags of the different host countries. Have a look at his Formula One 2011 Poster Series after the jump.

Moscow Drift

You’ve seen the reckless Moscow run where a Yahama R1 rider diced in and out of traffic. We return to the city, this time for a less speedier but equally dangerous hobby, that of drifting.

Red Bull: The Art of Flight

Flight is just not for the birds. Airplanes do it too, so do sky divers, and BASE jumpers like it as well. And according to Red Bull, snowboarders are big proponents of it too. The energy-in-a-can company has joined forces with Quicksilver to create a movie that follows a bunch of powder-obsessed sportsmen madmen as they travel the world and take their passion for snowboarding to greater heights.

The film is called The Art of Flight and this is the official trailer. It’s snow porn at its finest, enjoy.

The Art of Flight is set to release in September of this year.

Epic Free Running!

Remember the compilation of terrible freerunning fails and bails? If not, refresh your memory here. As a foil to that, we happened upon a trio of videos that display how the tricks and spins that distinguish free running from parkour are supposed to be done.

The first video, a showreel for British free running team Storm Freerun, contains displays of awesomeness by the team’s current members, although it could have done without all the posturing in the beginning.

The second compilation is by the outfit 3RUN, so-called because of the three disciplines they are excellent at – free running, parkour, and martial arts. It’s a little nauseating in the beginning but if you fight back the vomit, it gets better.

The next clip is the reportedly the world’s best free running compilation, volume 3. It’s relatively entertaining and only brought down by the horrible sounds of Evanescence.

The first day back at work is never pleasant, especially so when no one else in my department is in the office. And seeing the lyrics to Celine Dion’s “All By Myself” still scrawled on the whiteboard reminds me that even the cleaning staff are yet to return from holiday. To pass the time, I cry into my coffee cup imagine I’m doing far more adventurous things and flying squirrels always come to my mind first. Check out this fine example of wingsuit base jumping by Phoenix Fly.

Top 10 Best Jumps Ever!

Humankind is capable of amazing feats in realms of science, medicine, engineering, technology, and a whole lot of other -logies. This extends to the world of sport which has its fair share of loonies out to perform the biggest, baddest, most extreme stunts. From BASE jumping into the Cave of Swallows to high flying squirrels to Travis Pastrana to an airforce officer who is crazier than boatload of epileptics, this compilation of awesome jumps is a homage to extreme sports.

Hit the jump to see more footage from the #1 best jump and another one that I think should have been included in the list.

This clip from Discovery Science contains more footage from Joseph Kittinger’s historic jump in 1960. He holds the records for having the highest, fastest, and longest skydive when he jumped from 31,300 m, fell for four minutes and 36 seconds, and reached a maximum speed of 988 kilometres per hour!

While this can’t match Kittinger’s effort, free-diver Guillaume Néry’s underwater base jump at Dean’s Blue Hole is an amazing journey nonetheless.

Cheers! World Cup Beer Posters

Everyone loves Raymond beer. And moreso during these last few weeks as millions of extra pints are being downed all around the world. A brewery in China reported sells 42 000 bottles a day and on one day in South Korea 345 000 bottles. Meanwhile in South Africa, it is expected that 10 million litres will be sold during the soccer world cup. The figures all make sense because beer makes winning that much more sweeter and losing more bearable.

To celebrate the teams that have qualified for round of 16 stage of the soccer world cup, Moxy Creative created “Cheers!”, a set of poster where each country is shown as vintage label on bottle of beer. Check them out after the jump.

Bzzzzzzzzzz: Funniest Vuvuzela Images

The vuvuzela has been a South African institution since the 90s. While they may sound like a horde of angry weaponized bees, vuvuzelas are a staple of the football world cup, a soundtrack for the tournament if you will. One local lass ripped her windpipe trying to blow into the device (perhaps sucking was her forte), players have complained the drone has messed with their concentration, and one broadcaster has added audio filters to dampen the constant blaring. In all seriousness, some commentators have likened the sound to an elephant passing gas or a cow being given a surprise enema, which in itself would be a funny sight.

It seems some of the ====<() madness has died down from Twitter unless for some reason you’re following @the_vuvuzela, but the vuvuzela is parping its way to memedom with funny image macros popping up on the 4chan boards. Have a look at some of them collected by Know Your Meme.
