Extreme “Slopeflying” Antics in Stryn, Norway

This looks like an extremely dangerous high-flying sequence out of a video game. But clearly it is not, for the graphics are altogether too real.

Joachim “Jokke” Sommer, an extreme sportsman shot this exhilarating clip up in the picturesque mountains of Stryn, Norway. It’s called slopeflying and shows the wingsuited Sommer as he zips dangerously close to the mountainside at a rate of 200 km/h! INTENSE!

This is the funniest thing I’ve heard in ages. Disappointed at the state of dubstep in the world, DJ Logam from interdimensional recording label Betamorph Recordings has shown how simple it has become to create a dubstep track, so much so that even your mom could do it.

Creepy “1/2″ Face Illusions

I see what you did there, Jesús González Rodríguez. In his photo project entitled 1/2, the student from Venezuela creates illusions using the human face. Rodríguez takes frontal and side-on shots of his subject’s face and then merges them to create a rather creepy composite.

In Now That You’re Big, artist Simon Greiner creates a hilarious sex education book in the style of Dr. Seuss.

Drawn in a style similar to the very popular children’s books, Greiner rhymes the story of a boy who is growing up and starts to notice the other sex. The tale starts off innocently with booboobs and junk, and moves to the matter of sex in the hut (and in the butt), and finally to the miracle that is birth. Shooting Mosquitoes With Laser Beams

I’m easily ~~aroused~~ amused. Find below a slow-motion snuff video that shows an unsuspecting mosquito being zapped by a laser beam.

It seems that the mosquito didn’t just wander into the path of the laser, it was being targeted. In 2007, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation tasked a company called Intellectual Ventures to think up new technologies to fight malaria. One of their creations was the Photonic Fence, a defense system that could identify a mosquito by how fast its wings are beating, and then shoot it out of the sky.

Some things are better left unexplained. I choose to do that here because I have no idea what Kim Pimmel is on about.

I combined everyday soap bubbles with exotic ferrofluid liquid to create an eerie tale, using macro lenses and time lapse techniques. Black ferrofluid and dye race through bubble structures, drawn through by the invisible forces of capillary action and magnetism.

Compressed 01: Ferrous printer toner particles floating on the surface of water are attracted by a magnet and align to the invisible magnetic field around them. The patterns and motions that result are strangely ordered and organized.

Food as Seen Through an Electron Microscope

We’re big fans of how the scanning electron microscope can show the smallest of details. If you liked the last set of in-depth SEM images, you may like the works of Caren Alpert.

As a child, Alpert was fascinated with the back-page quiz of “3-2-1 Contact” Magazine, a quiz that tasked the viewer to identify the items in a selection of close-up images. The photographer (and food lover) has always been interested in the smaller details and has been photographing food for over eight years. After seeing an image taken with an SEM, Alpert was inspired to use the scientific equipment to capture images of the foods that we ingest on a regular basis. The magnification is between 45 and 850 times and the resulting images look like alien landscapes, delicious alien landscapes. Her project is entitled Terra Cibus, see some of her images after the jump.

PONPONPON! A Surreal J-Pop Music Video

I know more about the Hadron Collider than what goes on in the minds of some Japanese people. In the music video for her debut J-pop single for Warner Music Japan, “PONPONPON”, blogger and model Kyary Pamyu Pamyu welcomes you to her “doll house”. It’s a rather odd place where floating brains and eyes embedded in toast are commonplace, and even her farts are strikingly colourful. You must see this video, be warned though, the tune can be extremely catchy and/or unbearably annoying.

Amazing Electron Microscope Images

A photomicrograph (or micrograph) is an image that is taken through a microscope, and we’ve covered a few of those on the blog including Nikon’s “Small World” competition, a traveller’s tale in a strange microscopic world, and an incredibly close-up look at insects. If you missed any of those, click here to see them.

North American scientific instruments company, FEI, is in the business of supplying electron microscopes to a various industries and it is the fantastic images taken by their line of scanning electron microscope (or SEM), that we’ll show you today. According FEI, their SEMs can magnify 20 to 1,000,000 times better a light microscope and can be used in tasks that contain long scientific words such as 3D cellular ultrastructure, macromolecular localization, and 3D tissue imaging. The proof is really in the details. Hit the jump to see some of the FEI’s microscopic images.

Hydrothermal Worm

This cute critter is a marine organism found near hydrothermal vents in the ocean. It has been magnified 525 times.

Platinum Nano-Wire

This is a platinum wire that has been milled to 50 nanometres in diameter. It is to be used a gas sensor.

Human Tooth

Dentin is found in teeth and comprises tiny channels called dentinal tubules. This images shows those tubules.

Biofilm

This images shows a biofilm that has developed on carbon steel after 14 days of immersion in seawater.

Canyon

This is what happens when you cut a semiconductor at a sloping angle.

Silver and Copper

These colourfully geometric objects are silver particles and copper crystals.

Catepillar Mouth

A catepillar’s mouth and sensory organs are shown here.

Sponge Spicule

This is an image of a spicule as found in a South African sponge (the animal, and not the dish-washing implement).

Crystal Ocean

These are copper crystals on a copper surface.

Nanoflowers

These flowers have been obtained through hydrothermal synthesis, a process of growing crystals from aqueous solutions.

While whippets do look good in hats (example), you may recognize the specific headgear in Derick’s image. You may also have noted the play on words there, based on Devo’s single, “Whip It”. If you didn’t, then here’s a chance for you to experience the music video. It contains a cross-eyed Asian lass brandishing a gun, a maternal figure offering everyone some of her pie (literal, I think), and the band members wearing rather odd red hats. It was the 80s so none of that really needs explaining.

Waste Not, Want Not: Japanese Scientist Makes Poop Burger

Nothing should really surprise you when the Japanese are concerned. The latest news from the Internet says that our far east friends have managed to create edible hamburger “meat” that just so happens to made of protein extracted from human poo.

A sewage plant in Tokyo was faced with an abundance of sewage mud and asked scientist Mitsuyuki Ikeda to think of possible uses for it. The mud contains bacteria that feed on the human faeces, and Ikeda found that the bacteria themselves contained a lot of protein. That discovery led Ikeda to the next logical step — synthesizing the protein and adding soya and other additives to make the “meat” taste just like beef. The process is explained in detail below.

If you have trouble believing this shit, you’re not alone. YouTuber user Gimmeaflakeman has some concerns about the validity of the video.

Human Anatomy in LEGO

Taking his name from the warning on the toy boxes, Flickr user Choking Hazards embarks on a bit of mad science. He had represented the anatomy of the human body in LEGO form, complete with a skeletal structure, organs, circulatory system, and even a pair of wee testicles.
