Awesome Gears of War Fan Art

Gears of War 3 has been met with universal acclaim, garning an average of 91 on metacritic. The two previous titles in the series have netted near perfect scores too, with the first Gears of War standing out as one of the most epic third person shooters available on a gaming console.

The people who play it love it and recently deviantART held a content, Gears/Artists United, that asked its members to capture the essence of Gears of War in the form of wallpaper.

The first prize was set at USD 10,000, a Gears of War 3 limited edition console, and deviantART swag. The competition ended on September 28th, with 100 semi-finalists having been chosen by deviantART staff. Have a look at some of the fantastic submissions after the jump.

Onelargeprawn Goes to rAge 2011

Good news, everyone! Most of you South African readers will probably be aware that rAge, the Southern African video game expo, is going to be happening this weekend. Happy for you, Onelargeprawn.co.za will be represented at rAge 2011. Well, not the Lord High Prawn himself, sadly for you fans of His Prawniness, but his loyal lackey. And we won’t have a stand, sadly (we’re simply not that big), but you will find me wandering around, taking notes, taking pictures, and taking an opportunity to meet any and all who are going to be at the Coca Cola Dome this Saturday. If you see someone on the show floor who looks a lot like this [ed: don’t you mean precisely like this?]:

then come say hi, introduce yourself, and we can chat about…well…pretty much anything. Also, if I happened to have upset you with one of my reviews, please don’t hit me. I’m sure we can come to some agreement. Feel free, also, to follow me on Twitter, because I’ll be tweeting from the event (not that every other blogger in ZA won’t be, but anyhow!)

Hope to see you there!

Uncharted 3 Sand Art

You may recall Kseniya Simonova and the poignant sand art entry that won her first place in the 2009 “Ukraine’s Got Talent!” show.

It seems Sony have enlisted the services of another sand painter, Natalya Netselya, to produce a piece featuring scenes from the Naughty Dog’s upcoming action-adventure title, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Watch as Netselya starts out with a basic scene, and with successive wipes, builds up the Arabian desert backdrop and the wise-cracking protagonist, Nathan Drake.

The Koopa Call to Arms

King Koopa is at his wit’s end. Despite having an almost unlimited supply of Goombas, tanks, naval vessels, and an air force, it seems that ridding the Mushroom Kingdom of a pudgy plumber has proved more difficult than planned. The great Koopa has now turned to the power of advertising to gain more support for his cause.

In a set of emotionally-charged propaganda posters, Bowser asks the question, “The Koopa are fighting. Why aren’t you?” and calls for residents of Mushroom Kingdom to join the great Koopa cause. See the set of posters after the jump.

Play This: FOTONICA

FOTONICA is a first person shooter jumper that reminds me of all the good times that were had in REZ. Created by Milan-based game design studio, Santa Ragione, FOTONICA is a free-running game set in an abstract vector landscape where you speed through a level, jumping from one platform to another, and collecting the pink dots along the way. The games relies on the use of one button and what seems like a simple task is quite deceptive, especially for someone like me, who has as much spring in my step as a dead flea. See the trailer to FOTONICA below.

You can play the demo on Kongregate or you can download the game (34 MB) from the FOTONICA website to speed through all the five levels. If you like the game, you can give the developers some real money, however little or as much as you like, according to their “Pay What You Want” pricing system.

Portal: No Escape

Since it debuted three days ago, this fan-made short film has been viewed over three million times! Directed by Dan Trachtenberg with special effects by John Chesson, Portal No: Escape was shown earlier at Comic-Con to much praise.

Based on the Portal universe, the seven-minute short blends live action and computer graphics superbly to tell the tale of a woman (played by Danielle Rayne) who must escape her cell with the aid of a handy Portal gun. It starts off a tad slow but it certainly picks up.

The World Is Saved!

Gamers, whoever and wherever you are, should appreciate this. In a wonderful collaborative effort, IGN and Danny Wiessner (he wrote and performed the piece) created a song for fans of video games and captures the essence of gaming.

From empty stomachs, parched mouths, and the looming deadlines of work life, The World Is Saved takes a look at the trials that we face, the experience we gain after we have finally saved the day, and the memories that stay with us long after the GAME OVER screen.

Angry Birds as Superheroes!

The Internet is a veritable treasure chest of superhero mashups. We’ve seen them re-imagined as dinosaurs, felines, emotional wrecks, and even with their genders reversed. And now it seems they’ve been crossed with birds, angry ones at that.

Springfield Punx reader Ryan has been hard at work dressing up Angry Birds as if they were superheroes from the Marvel and DC comic books. As tired as you may be of Rovio’s cash cow fowl, there is no denying that these angry heroes are the teensiest bit cute. Have a look at the amusing Iron Bird, Angry Bat, the Avian Torch, and others after the jump.

A Tale of Cheerleaders, Chainsaws, and Zombies

Humanity has been battling the living dead for decades, it seems like bloody forever. These fetid corpses have invaded many facets of our lives including the novels and comics that we read and TV series and movies that we watch. The games that we play aren’t safe either. Frank West beat them off with practically anything he could find, while Isaac Clarke dispatched zombies in space using his considerable talents in dismemberment. Jill Valentine fought off the freakish mutants of the Umbrella Corporation, and the average homeowner even had to repel a zombie attack through the strategic use of potted plants.

And now it seems we humans may have yet another champion against the zombie horde. From the completely off-kilter mind of Suda51 (see our Shadows of the Damned review) comes a tale of 18-year-old Juliet Starling who must rid her high school of a nasty case of the zombies. This is a task that she seems to relish, thanks to her wickedly awesome chainsaw. Also, she has bizarrely chosen wear her rather revealing cheerleading uniform, one would assume that is to minimize the amount of blood splashed on her clothes. Did I mention that the disembodied head of her boyfriend serves as a sidekick? There is bound to many a gratuitous upskirt shot, sexual innuendo by the metric ton, and outrageous amounts of blood and guts, so nothing that should come as a surprise from a Suda51 game. Have a look at the debut trailer to Lollipop Chainsaw below.

Lollipop Chainsaw releases on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. If you’re on Twitter, follow @lollichainsaw.

Hilarious GTA IV Mashup!

If you’ve surfed the Internet, you may have unsuspecting clicked a link that takes you to Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up”. You may have even been tricked with the Russian rickroll or seen the fantastic mashup, Never Gonna Give Your Teen Spirit Up.

Rockrolling is an obsession for some people, and YouTube user YeardlyDiamond1 found that he was always on the receiving end of the bait-and-switch. Intense hatred for the song eventually turned to love, and as a labour of love, he has created a very special music video for Astley’s famous tune. Liberty City plays host to an 80s party and the dancing talents of GTA IV’s Niko Bellic, Johnny Boy, and Double L take centre stage.
