Watch: Bigbird the Adopted Pelican Learns to Fish

This is an endearing tale. Bigbird, a great white pelican was separated from his flock during a storm and was found by Jeffrey, a camp manager at the idyllic Greystoke Mahale on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

Pelicans are gregarious birds who live communally and hunt together, and Jeffrey feared that Bigbird may not be able to feed himself. Each morning he took Bigbird kayaking and fishing. The GoPro footage captures their charming interactions.

Watch “Meg” the Lioness Hunting a Waterbuck

Lions are part of the elite club of apex predators. In this fantastic footage shot by South African zoologist Kevin Richardson, we see just how capable lionesses are at hunting (they do most of it for the pride).

Richardson strapped GoPro to one of his lionesses named Meg and we watch from her perspective as she sneaks through the veld on the hunt for a waterbuck. Once she spots it, Meg gives chase and before the buck realises the danger, it’s already too late.

Woah Dude, Epic Roof Jump!

While sports people are tumbling all over the place in the Commonwealth Games, Ethan Swanson is engaging in some urban gymnastics in Chicago, Illinois. The professional stunt man donned some GoPro gear and decided to leap off one roof onto another and slide down it, in the hopes of landing with his feet firmly planted on a neighbouring spiral staircase. It’s high degree of difficulty, did Swanson nail the execution? Find out below.

Drones Over O’ahu

I went took a crash course on how to pilot a drone. I crashed, of course.

In the capable hands, UAV drones can capture glorious scenes. Hawaiian Eric Sterman took to the skies with a DJI Phantom quadcopter equipped with a GoPro camera and shot some breathtaking footage of surfers as they rode the huge waves in the Banzai Pipeline on O’ahu’s North Shore. Have a look at the gnarly surf video below.

Amber the Amazing Downhill Dog

In dogs meets base jumper, Mario Richard goes for a short flight and his dog, Cajun, faithfully watches and follows him down the mountain to meet him at the landing point. It’s an endearing, albeit chaotic doggie cam video. See it on Vimeo if you missed it.

In the same vein, whenever mountain biker James R takes to the track, his trusty dog Amber is hot on his heels. Amber is a Vizsla, a Hungarian gun dog that is known for its natural hunting abilities. James attached a GoPro to his bike and filmed Amber as she zipped through the forest, taking the most efficient route to keep up her “prey”. Take a look at their chase video below.

It’s a (Capetonian) Dog’s Life

Dave Meinert, a director and filmmaker in Cape Town, was asked by a friend look after their dog, Lemon, for the weekend. Meinert did what any filmmaker worth his camera would do — he custom-fitted a GoPro camera onto Lemon and took the dog to the beach, for a round of putt putt (mini golf), and to visit other sights around Cape Town.

He gathered all the footage and edited it to form the music video to local artist Johnny Neon’s song, Hearts. Lemon has quite the charmed life, see the exuberant music video below.
