When XCOM: Enemy Unknown released back in 2012, it was an enormous breath of fresh air fro the tactical genre of video games. More exciting was the fact that the game appeared on consoles as well as PC. The expansion pack, Enemy Within, released shortly after, and it was just as well received as the original game. The spin-off, XCOM Declassified mucked with things a bit, but was still a fun game. Cue the sequel to Enemy Within: XCOM 2, which sees a PC-only release. More aliens to kill! More countries to save! If you’ll recall, last year we reviewed XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and we loved it so much we gave it nine and a half prawns. That’s a lot of prawns. The game is back, this time as a standalone expansion pack (ie, you don’t need to own the original XCOM to play it). To prepare for this review, you have some homework—go read the review of the first XCOM game, because much of what I have to say will be covered there; I’m only going to include what’s changed in this review. Late last year, we reviewed the first reboot of the XCOM series of games, titled Enemy Unknown. The prequel to this game, The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, while not a turn-based game, still retains some of the strategy elements while bringing you to the battlefield as a third-person shooter. It’s been a decent few years for reboots of old gaming franchises, from Syndicate to Duke Nukem to just about anything in-between. The latest game to receive this sort of treatment is XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a reboot of the 90s game series, XCOM. The original series was an amazing tour-de-force of strategy gaming, and set an incredible bar for other games in the genre. Let’s see if the reboot is worthy of its ancestors.
