Invasive Species: These Trees are Cell Phone Towers

In a series entitled Invasive Species, South African photographer Dillon Marsh didn’t photograph pockets of Eucalyptus trees growing amongst the indigenous forest on the slopes of Table Mountain. Instead he made references to the (badly) disguised cell phone towers that have been dotted around Cape Town.

In 1996, mobile telecomms company Vodacom commissioned two gentlemen, Ivo Branislav Lazic and Aubrey Trevor Thomas, to create a set of materials specifically for the concealment and disguisement of the antennae atop the cell phone masts. The duo created what was supposedly the world’s first cell phone tower to be disguised as a palm tree. In 2009, Marsh tracked and photographed these fake palms and other cell phone towers disguised as coniferous trees as they spread across the city. Have a look at the Invasive Species after the jump.

A Humorous Look at Technology

We live in an age of wonder where people are able to communicate with each other instantly. Using cell phones, computers, and gaming consoles, to name but a few. We have become so reliant upon these marvels, that to envision living life without them is down-right scary. It has integrated into our very fabric of existence, and it is funny to see how we have evolved with it.

I’m sure all of you, me included, have had a discussion along these very same lines at some point in the recent past. How would life have turned out differently without cell phones? I personally cannot imagine a life without mine. But it’s not just cell phones that shape the way we live; we depend on televisions, refrigerators, microwaves and coffeemakers (who can function without coffee these days?).

Let’s take a look at the comical aspect of how we as humans have evolved along with technology and where inevitably it might lead. Read more after the jump.

I Dream of Better Cellular Days

Running a blog affords one a few liberties and self-promotion is certainly one of them :-D

I’ve got an old Nokia 3510i hand-me-down from my sister-in-law, Animal Muppet. It gets the job done, but all the kitty stickers on it is really ruining my gangsta rep.

Now I just found out that I’m a finalist in a competition on the local Samsung Blog where the main prize is an awesome Samsung Pixon cellular phone. And your vote could help me win it!

If you’d like to help out, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Register HERE – you’ll receive your login details in the email.
  2. Login to the Samsung Blog HERE and then cast your vote for the entry Skeet and Swizzle HERE.

A big thanks to the mates who have voted already, the cheque’s in the mail ;-)
