We Review: OlliOlli (3DS/Wii U)

OlliOlli is a 2D sidescrolling skateboarding game where you have to perform skateboard tricks for sick and gnarly scores. The name of the game, obviously, comes from the name of the skateboarding trick, the Ollie, and you have to make your way across various bits of urban jungle in search of the best scores and the grooviest moves. I don my helmet and kneepads, grab my board, and prepare to gleam the cube.

Skateboarder Triggers Kloof Nek Speed Camera

The 60 KM/h speeding camera on Cape Town’s bendy Kloof Nek Road has snapped many an over-zealous driver. Wanting to catch its attention, skateboarder Decio Lourenco began his wild ride from the top of Kloof Nek Road. The derring-do resulted in a flash of brilliance.

YouTube user AndrĂ© Roux records Decio as winds his way down the hill, his nerves of steel and supreme board control the only things preventing him from becoming road kill. He glides down Kloof Nek to the sounds of AWOLNATION’s Sail. Check out the uber-ballsy Spoofing the Cam.

It has been reported that the speed camera clocked Decio hurtling down the road at a staggering 100 km/h! With over 205,8555 views on the video, Decio might have gained some unwanted attention. The City of Cape Town wants to have a few stern words with him, “prosecution” being the operative one.

Slow Motion Skateboarding Fails

Some people succeed at failing and this video from Youtube user ashomsky celebrates those successes.

Shot on a Redlake N3 high speed motion camera at up to 1,000 frames per second, this fail compilation shows skateboarders who perform some wonderful tricks, they just don’t happen to stick the landing all that well.

I fell off a skateboard once, and that about wraps up my experience with the culture that is so firmly established in today’s society. Aside from skateboard-inspired furniture, I do like looking at the art that goes onto this awesome board with wheels connected to it.

Smashing Magazine goes through 40 amazing skateboard designs. Here are three of my favourites:

IMAKETHINGS aka Andrew Groves, is an illustrator, artist, maker of small things and creator of beasts. These are 5 of his handpainted decks.
