A Vintage Map of a Woman’s Heart

In the 19th century America, women were expected to hold up to an ideal that was “True Womanhood.” There were four corner stones of true womanhood — piety, purity, submissiveness, and domesticity. It was these virtues by which women would be judged, and those who possessed all of them would be assured happiness in life. This idealized version of women was advertised in newspapers, magazines, and somewhere between the years of 1833 and 1842, D. W. Kellogg created a lithograph of a map of a woman’s heart.

Entitled A Map of the Open Country of a Woman’s Heart, the map had love at the centre of a woman’s heart, with a range of mountains that protected it from the dangers of selfishness, fickleness, vanity, and flirtatious behaviour. A sizeable part of the map wass taken up by the love of fashion, where it seems there was even a monument dedicated to it. It certainly painted women as shallow creatures and the subtitle seemed to be a warning to those thinking of travelling the lands. It read, “Exhibiting its internal communications, and the facilities and dangers to Travellers therein.”

SA Runner Brushes Off Gender Row, Blazes to 800m Gold Medal

South African runner Caster Semenya won the 800m womens final at the IAAF World Championships last night, and convincingly so. She was over two seconds clear of the next runner, and her time is the best recorded in the world so far this year. Semenya experienced some controversy three weeks ago, when the IAAF requested her to undergo a gender test. After crossing the finish line last night, her gesture seemed to indicate what she thought of the matter – she crossed her arms and wiped the dirt of her shoulders. Jay Z would have been proud.

Due to the complexity of a gender verification test, the results would not be confirmed for several weeks, consequently the IAAF could not prevent Semenya from competing in last night’s final. It is, however, understood that South Africa came under some informal pressure to consider withdrawing Semenya from the race. Thankfully they stuck to their Glocks and let her run.

Several medical practitioners with titles ending in “ist” are performing further tests on the 18-year old from Polokwane. Doctors believe she could be suffering from a genetic disorder which means she has both male and female chromosomes. No word on when the results will be made public.

Asher Roth: Loving the College Life

Asher Roth is a 23-year old white rapper from rural Pennsylvania whose debut album “Asleep in the Bread Aisle” charted to the #1 spot on iTunes top 10 albums within 24 hours since its release. Sold out in-stores across the US, major retailers underestimated the grass roots support that Roth has received from blogs, magazines, and the hip-hop community for his raps on suburbia and varsity life.

Asleep in the Bread Aisle has received mixed reviews – praised for its old-school influenced sound, but also criticized for its limited subject matter.

Smoking weed, having sex, and swearing is hardly riveting material, and when Asher can’t turn these topics into something clever, it becomes tiresome

His party-rap single “I Love College” about weed, beer, drunk women, and frat parties unsurprisingly scored 36,128,311 plays on MySpace and logged another 6 million views on YouTube. Check it out.

LEGO For Adults

Any adult fan of Lego will tell you, the following LEGO ads are goddamn FAKE. In fact, some have found it a big insult to the adult LEGO fan community, who apparently spends their days in damp basements building tasteful large scale models, and not making horny hos.

An avid rabid adult Lego fan also mentioned that one can’t even build these models – the geometry is all wrong and the curves are represented badly. In any case it turns out these are actually part of a series entitled Pixxxel by Jean Yves Lemoigne for Amusment Magazine.
