We Review: Schrodinger’s Cat and the Raiders of the Lost Quark

No one should have any excuse for not knowing Erwin Schroedinger’s famous thought-experiment about the cat that was both alive and dead at the same time, as a metaphor for quantum states. For those of you who forgot, in short, there’s a cat in a sealed box with a vial of poison, a detector, and a radioactive isotope. If the isotope decays, the detector detects it, breaks the vial, poison is released and the cat dies. If it doesn’t decay, the cat is alive and well. Without opening the box, how do you know if the cat is alive or dead? You don’t…until you open the box and observe the cat, it is both dead and alive at the same time. Don’t worry, though. No real cats were harmed in this experiment. Does all this have much relevance to the review? Why yes. Yes it does. Read on to find out why.

We Review: Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush

In 2005, the Nintendo DS saw the release of Kirby: Canvas Curse, a Kirby game that used an unusual mechanic to control the pink puffball: drawing on the touch screen. The game was well received by critics, and this, I imagine, is what prompted Nintendo to release a sequel for the Wii U, and with a new aesthetic: clay. Or “plasticine” as it’s sometimes known as. When my son was younger, he called it “lunch”. Let’s see how well-moulded this game is.

We Review: Kirby’s Adventure Wii (Wii U Virtual Console)

Kirby is one of the stalwarts that has been a part of the Nintendo family for almost 25 years. In 2010, we saw the release of Kirby’s Adventure Wii, and it was fairly well received. I get a chance to review the Virtual Console version of the game for the Wii U and test the Wii Virtual Console in the process.

We Review: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a spin-off game from Super Mario 3D World. The eponymous Captain Toad and his faithful companion, Toadette, are out seeking treasure, and it’s your job to help them get it. What makes the game different from your standard platformer is that Captain Toad cannot jump, and he’s not very fast either. I help the Captain of the Toad Brigade on his adventure, and try to view the world from a different angle to review this game.

We Review: Flyhunter Origins (PS Vita)

Flyhunter Origins is a new game from new development studio Steel Wool Games, whose resumés include lots of work at Pixar. I take their new hero, Zak, for a small walk in a giant park using my PS Vita (as opposed to the Android, iOS, and Steam versions) to see what the fuss is about. Read more

We Review: Paper Monsters Recut

Paper Monsters Recut is a Wii U port of an iOS sidescrolling platformer, and features cute papercraft scenery and critters. It certainly looks deceptively cute. Let’s grab our markers, construction paper, and glitter glue, and see what we can make of this game.

We Review: Shovel Knight (3DS)

If you haven’t yet heard of Shovel Knight, then you’ve probably no interest in gaming’s glorious 8-bit past. Shovel Knight was created as a homage to the wonder of 8-bit console gaming (with a few minor tweaks). He’s quite literally that: a knight armed with naught but a humble shovel to dig his way out of trouble. I take my vorpal sword shovel in hand, and off I trundle to seek the manxome foes. Read more

We Review: Teslagrad (Wii U)

Teslagrad is one of the latest in a wave of beautifully illustrated, beautifully programmed indie 2D games that we lucky gamers have a chance to experience. The game has seen some success on the PC, and now we have the Wii U version. I take the power into my own hands to see how electrifying the game can be.

We Review: Bayonetta (Wii U Version)

The original Bayonetta first appeared on PS3 and Xbox360 about four years ago and it was received with differing amounts of criticism. In light of the release of the sequel, Nintendo is releasing the first game for Wii U along with some new controls and new Nintendo-exclusive costumes for the leggy witch. Let’s see how it compares to the other console versions, shall we?

We Review: Max: The Curse of Brotherhood

Back in 2010, developers Press Play released a game called Max and the Magic Marker. The game invited players to draw and create parts of the levels to solve puzzles and complete the game. The sequel to the game has just landed on PC and Xbox360 (after having a bit of time to itself on the Xbox One). I accompany Max on his adventure to see what The Curse of Brotherhood actually is.
