Another year another FIFA game, with a year number appended to it, and this time FIFA 17 has a new new things to share with us. Yes, they’re all soccer related. I’ll go get my boots and my ball and I’ll meet you on the pitch for this review.
We don’t often get a chance to review DLC. But when the DLC is pretty much the core of the game, well, we owe it to you, dear gamers. In any event, you wouldn’t think that soccer and pinball would mix well, so I’m here to tell you whether this game is scoring hat tricks, or getting red carded for bad behaviour.
Everyone loves Raymond beer. And moreso during these last few weeks as millions of extra pints are being downed all around the world. A brewery in China reported sells 42 000 bottles a day and on one day in South Korea 345 000 bottles. Meanwhile in South Africa, it is expected that 10 million litres will be sold during the soccer world cup. The figures all make sense because beer makes winning that much more sweeter and losing more bearable.
To celebrate the teams that have qualified for round of 16 stage of the soccer world cup, Moxy Creative created “Cheers!”, a set of poster where each country is shown as vintage label on bottle of beer. Check them out after the jump.
Pssst. Here’s how not to win at quiz night – have me in your team AND let me answer all the sports questions. For example, if you were to ask me in what year did Paraguay win the soccer world cup, I wouldn’t know that was a trick question. Given that the world cup is a little more than a week away, I had best brush up on my soccer trivia.
For the first time in its history, the FIFA World Cup will be played on African soil, and to celebrate this spectacle, ESPN has teamed up with American ad agency Wieden+Kennedy and local illustrators at Am I Collective to create a set of colourful murals for each of the 32 teams that will be participating. The artwork is done in a style similar to the art found on our streets and hand-painted movie posters one sees around West Africa. Each mural tells of the culture and soccer history the nation and is quite well done, although I wonder how the Australians will take to their team being represented by a manimal who looks dead keen to box the corner flag. Time really has flown by, the 2010 Soccer World Cup is just two weeks away. Within 33 months, the brand new 68 000-seater Cape Town Stadium was erected. Made out of 93 000 cubic metres of concrete, some 9 000 glass panels, and the sweat of 2500 workers, the stadium is quite the spectacle. The bill for this massive project was a an equally whopping R4,4-billion.

For the couple of weeks that the FIFA Soccer World Cup will be running, South Africa is going to be the centre of the world. With the tournament a mere 34 days away, sportswear giant Nike has teamed up with awesome designer/illustrator Kronk (Cape Town FTW!) to create a range of clothing that represents Mzansi and our love for the beautiful game.
Nike released a 30-second spot showing Mzansi “bleed its colours” with the greens, blacks, and yellows of the national flag seeping through the city. Kronk plays a little cameo in the clip, check it out.
Kronk is one of six international artists who collaborated with Nike Sportswear to create an alternative national team kit. He was asked to make a crest, mascot, print, and typeface in his unique style. His designs were revealed at a media launch that happened earlier this week. In these ads, you’ll recognize pretty-boy footballer Cristiano Ronaldo who will soon be visiting our South African shores for the football extravaganza, the 2010 FIFA World Cup. You may have also noticed the popped collar of that ubiquitous polo shirt he’s wearing. It’s no ordinary polo, for it is the Nike Grand Slam Polo that is made from flat-knit fabric and features a subtle vented collar construction. I have no idea what that means, but it certainly does look cool, and sometimes that’s all you need in life.
To launch the Grand Slam Polo, Nike enlisted the services of British photographer Rankin and athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, Joe Cole, and Patrice Evra. Have a look at the Bleed Your Colours ad below.
I couldn’t possibly make this shit up if I tried. During a game of footy somewhere in Manchester UK, a player was carded for passing gas. Chorlton Villa were playing rivals International Manchester, when Manchester were awarded a penalty.
As the spot kick was taken, One of Chorlton Villa’s players farted, and the penatly was saved. The referee, however, called foul and yellow carded the Villa player for cutting the cheese at an inopportune moment. Villa’s goalie was then given the red card for saying the ref was “the worst he had seen in years” and another Villa player was sent packing for expressing disbelief that his mate could be sent off letting rip a bottom burp.
Needless to say, Villa won the game 6-4 but now face a fine of GBP 97.00.
